Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
I BELIEVE IN THE TRIUNE GOD
I am not a scientist. I am not a mental giant. I don't claim the title "doctor of divinity." I am (I think) a simple man who understands that there are many things outside my sphere of understanding and knowledge. I'm not sure I have an area of expertise.
Now don't get me wrong, I read and meditate and earnestly try to understand things that are important (i.e., the things of God). But there are things that simply cannot be fully apprehended. One such thing is the nature of the Triune God.
In the Bible, the Almighty tells me that there is One God. In that same Word the One God describes Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Therefore we say that God is Triune (Three in One). Since God is not the author of confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33), I conclude that the problem is with my limited intellect. I don't fully grasp how God can be three persons, yet one God. I can compare the nature of God to a triangle (three points yet one triangle), but that doesn't really help me understand God.
Still, in simple childlike faith, I believe that God is triune. God is called the Father because He is the father of Jesus Christ. I call Him my Father because through faith in His Son I am His child and heir of everlasting life (Galatians 3:26-27). My earthly father loves me and as a child I looked to him for love and support. My Heavenly Father loves me and as a child and adult I look to Him for strength and guidance.
If I have a question, I don't hesitate to speak with my earthly father. I need never hesitate to bring every need to my Heavenly Father either. He always has power to deliver me and is never away or too busy to hear.
Glory be to God the Father, Glory be to God the Son,
Glory be to God the Spirit; Great Jehovah, Three in One!
Glory, glory, While eternal ages run!
(The Lutheran Hymnal, 244:1)
