October's Memory Verse
Acts 4:12
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

- What To Do With A Mirror! -
James 1:22-25

This passage in James compares the Word of God to a mirror. With this in mind, I would suggest that in some ways, whatever we do with a mirror, we should do with God's Word.

What exactly should we do with a mirror?
  • WE LOOK INTO A MIRROR.
(James 2:23-25, "...beholding... beholdeth... looketh...") The Bible is given for us to "look into." God expects His people to meditate in His Word on a regular and daily basis. It is very important for God's people to "look into" God's Word as individuals, as a family, and as a church congregation.
  • WE CONSIDER WHAT WE SEE IN THE MIRROR.
The word, "beholdeth" in our passage has the idea of "making a careful observation; to give attention and consideration." A mirror shows me how I actually appear, not how I think I look or how others say I look. God's Word reveals to us what we really are, not what we think we are or what others say we are, but our true condition. Unlike a mirror, which reveals my "natural face" (external physical appearance), the Bible reveals my true spiritual condition, it reveals the condition of my heart.
How foolish it is to look into God's Word and not give careful consideration to what it reveals to me about my spiritual condition.
  • WE RESPOND TO WHAT WE SEE IN THE MIRROR.
We look in the mirror, and see some adjustments that need to be made, and we respond and do whatever needs to be done. In like manner, as we look into God's Word and see that there are areas in my heart and life that need adjustment, then we respond and trust and obey the Bible's instructions.
(vs. 24) - "forgetteth" has the idea of walking away and not responding to what was revealed. The whole purpose of a mirror is to reveal to me my condition and help me make things right. The Bible is given to us (among other reasons) to reveal to us our true condition and instruct us what needs to be done to make things right in my life and my relationship with the Lord.
It is extremely important that God's people spend sufficient time every day in God's Word, meditating, studying, and obeying what we are told therein.
