International Mycological Congress 12 (IMC12)

Dear colleagues,

As President of the International Mycological Association, and Chair of the IMC12, we are writing to inform you about the upcoming International Mycological Congress that we hope you can pass along to your society members and fellow mycologists.

The organizing committee of the IMC12, along with the International Mycological Association has made the difficult decision to postpone the IMC12, which was originally planned to be held in Amsterdam in July 2022. The COVID-19 pandemic has had negative consequences for planning the upcoming IMC, and will still restrict international travel for some time to come. One of the main aims of IMC meetings is to engage the youth, facilitate face-to-face meetings, and hands-on workshops in mycology. To this end, we have decided to postpone IMC12 to July 2024. As organizers we are confident that we will be able to host an excellent Congress in the Netherlands in 2024. Additional details on the plans for 2024 will follow soon.

With best wishes,

Wieland Meyer, President: International Mycological Association
Pedro Crous, Chair IMC12

Atlas of Clinical Fungi 4th edition

With two volumes of densely filled pages in full colour on more than 700 fungi, the book provides a wealth of information on medical mycology. The two volumes are organized in analogy of the Fungal Kingdom, and because it includes numerous opportunists it is also useful for workers outside the medical area. Complementary to the search tools of the website, the book provides an overview of the rich data collected over 30 years of medical mycology, covering diagnostics, taxonomy, phylogeny, nomenclature, antifungals, and histopathology, validated by almost 8000 references. The layout is pleasant to read, and the photo plates are stunning, often showing unique features of the fungi. The Atlas of Clinical Fungi is a non-profit project and at € 275,- the book is reasonably priced. Buyers of the book will have free access to the website.

For online-only, the subscription fee for 2021 is € 75,-.
Note that after 1 January 2022, the website will be free of charge.

Sample pages and ordering information can be found here.

Who discovered the most beautiful novel species of fungi?

In anticipation of the IMC12 (July 2024), we are calling on mycologists globally to collect and describe the most beautiful novel species of fungi that they encounter. Submissions will be merged into a single scientific multi-author paper to be published in the Fungal Planet series in Persoonia (December 2023). The 12 most beautiful fungal photos will appear on the pages of the Westerdijk Fungal Biodiversity Calendar for 2024, and hard copies will be available at IMC12.

The prize: There will be 12 free student registrations to attend IMC12, one for each of the winning fungal descriptions, and an award at the congress itself.

The rules:

  • Submissions will adhere to the instructions to authors for Fungal Planet. Multiple submissions per author are allowed.
  • Each submission should have one landscape fungal photo (300 dpi) that will be evaluated for the award. This photo need not appear in the photo plate, and can be taken in nature, or with any type of microscope.
  • Submissions will be evaluated by a special committee, established by the International Mycological Association. Note: the evaluation is based on the 12 landscape photos, and treated separately from the materials submitted for publication. Double-blind peer review guidelines will be employed.
  • Deadline for submissions to p.crous@wi.knaw.nl is 15 September 2023.
