Courage to Resist Needs You Dec. 22, 2020 “Change… comes through continuous struggle”As we near the end of a challenging year, we’re thinking about the road ahead. The electoral college finally confirmed Biden’s presidential win on December 14th, bringing us closer than ever to a Joe Biden presidency. If all goes well, with a Biden administration we will have an opportunity once again to advocate for progressive change, and an end to unnecessary, imperialist wars. On the campaign trail, Biden promised American citizens a foreign policy based on increased diplomacy and cooperation instead of aggression, and an end to the endless wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Yemen. But, we know the reality is that holding Biden accountable to the American people instead of to military special interests will require ongoing organizing and public pressure. The sad truth is that even under a Democratic administration, the “poverty draft” is alive and well. American military recruiters heavily target young people from poor communities and communities of color, promising them benefits such as a path to college and a chance to defend democracy overseas. By the time they learn the reality of these conflicts, many conscientious objector applications are rejected, and many service people are left with the choice to continue fighting or face prison time. Since Courage to Resist’s founding in 2006, we have successfully helped hundreds of troops to speak out against illegal orders, to secure conscientious objector status, and to avoid criminal prosecution for acting on conscience. When President Obama’s administration went against his campaign promises by waging a war on military transparency, imprisoning whistleblowers including Chelsea Manning, we even successfully led the fight for her freedom. Thanks to support from people like you, history now remembers the public’s demand for increased government transparency and accountability.
Yes, I’ll give $25 Courage to Resist’s track record of success comes from our effective use of a variety of tactics - from grassroots organizing, to media outreach, to legal support - to influence military policies and free conscientious objectors. With your help, we can take the same measures to defend the rights of conscientious resisters under a Biden presidency, and to hold him accountable for ending these unjust wars. Thank you for being part of our movement! |
