Pittsburgh’s
newest urban lifestyle experience is here!
720 Music,
Clothing and Café is set to open its doors to the public
on Saturday, January 22, 2011. Located at 4405 Butler
Street in Pittsburgh, 720 is hosting its grand opening celebration
from noon to 12am. All day long, Pittsburgh’s finest deejays
will spin classic and progressive hip-hop, R&B and much more.
Performing deejays include Gene Stovall, DJ Source, Pete Butta,
Nice Rec, DJ Nugget, Buscrates, Outtareach, Brotha Mike, DJ Vex,
SMI, DJ T-One and more.
720 provides a soulful
new spot for Pittsburgh’s music enthusiasts to enjoy live
music, delicious pastries, and clothing and accessories. The shop’s
cool, eclectic vibe sets the stage for the Steel City’s
local artists to supply soothing live sessions featuring a blend
of soul, jazz, rare groove, deep house, classic hip-hop, reggae
and Afro-beat music. To cap off this relaxing experience, guests
can also grab a sweet treat and a cup of java from the café
located in front of the store.
“720 differentiates
itself from other local businesses by continuing to dedicate itself
to urban genres,” said Owner/Partner James Scoglietti. “We
are the only game in the city for hip-hop vinyl and have been
since the demise of Brave New Word roughly half a decade ago.”
What’s
the 411 with 720?
To fully appreciate the 720 experience, let’s start at the
front and work our way to the back of the store. First, grab a
pastry and a cup of java from the café at the door. Guests
can choose from an assortment of exclusive coffees and teas, fresh
smoothies and other beverages. Get comfortable in a seat at the
coffee bar or near the window and nibble on a delectable cupcake,
cookie or other pastry.
Next, cruise through
the music section to find a forgotten treasure or discover a new
favorite. 720 carries an eclectic mix of vinyl and CDs in an array
of music genres including Soul, Jazz, Deep House, Hip-Hop and
Afro-Beat. To complete the laid back, soulful vibe, check out
the stylish threads scattered throughout the music section. 720
offers men’s and women’s clothing, including T-shirts,
hoodies, hats, handbags and accessories from up-and-coming indie
designers. The shop plans to supply more women’s clothing
this spring.
Finally, stroll to
the back of the shop for live performances on the 720 stage. Get
your groove on to the soothing sounds of local and national artists.
Sit back and relax as soul, R&B and jazz performers grace
the stage and take you on a journey through the heart and soul
of the new progressive urban movement. Check the 720 calendar
and be sure to join us for these live events.
“I think 720’s
competitive advantage is that we are selling a lifestyle brand
to our customers,” said Owner and Partner Jovon Higgins.
“We are evoking our customers’ pleasure senses by
offering them great tasting beverages and pastries, cool vibes
and a distinct and diverse selection of music and clothing.”
Ownership
& Management
James
Scoglietti, Owner/Partner
James Scoglietti
has been known as Selecta-A staple in the Steel City’s
hip-hop scene since the late 80's. James started spinning
basement parties and eventually landed several club residencies,
all while holding down radio shows on WPTS-FM and WRCT-FM, respectively,
until 2003. He re-entered the radio world in 2010 on 91.3 FM WYEP
as host and DJ behind Grand Groove Radio-Every Sunday Night from
12am-4am.
In 1999, he opened
up the first iteration of 720 Records in a tiny space above GNC
in Oakland. Two years later, he moved the shop to East Liberty
with partner Megan Fitzgerald and remained there for seven years.
James moved the shop again in 2008, this to a space within the
world famous Jerry's Records, where it remained until spring of
2010. James took the business online for several months before
deciding to join forces with long time friends Nate, Jovon, Andew,
and Paul to form the new 720 multi-functional space.
Nate
Mitchell, Owner/Partner
Nate Mitchell,
aka DJ Nate Da Phat Barber, is easily one of
the most recognizable names in the Pittsburgh region.
Over the last 20 years, he has built a reputation as one of the
city’s premier deejays and top-rate barbers. His list of
businesses includes The Natural Choice Barber Shop & Salon
in Pittsburgh, Charismatic Nightlife event & promotions company,
and a thriving deejay business with an ever growing clientele.
Nate has also produced and promoted some of best events Pittsburgh
has ever witnessed. Not limiting himself to his hometown, Nate
has rocked crowds in such markets as New York, Philadelphia, Chicago,
Richmond, DC and many more.
Andrew
Burger, Owner/Partner
Andrew Burger
is a professional illustrator, designer and animator.
He is the sole proprietor of The Harmony Society record label.
In addition, he has rocked the ones and twos as H.I.M. DJ Mr.
Monkey MD, now DJ Senator Boo-Berry, for the past decade. Andrew
was also the music director for WRCT-FM 88.3 in Pittsburgh for
five years.
Jovon
Higgins, Owner/Partner
Jovon Higgins
has had goals and aspirations of becoming an entrepreneur for
the last seven years. She holds a bachelor’s degree
in psychology from Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va.,
and attended a year of graduate school at Chatham University in
Pittsburgh. Professionally, she has worked at many reputable institutions
in the mental health field as a counselor/therapist, and has also
counseled youth in various pre-college preparatory and after school
programs. Jovon has always had the desire to work in retail and
has more than five years of retail experience.
Paul
Dang, Owner/Partner
Paul is a busy person.
While attending graduate school at WHERE and finishing his film
project, he likes to get crafty, make t-shirts, and talk about
Jay-Z's alleged affiliation with the Illuminati. He mentions that
he gets his work ethic from his Vietnamese parents and all those
in Pittsburgh who work hard to make things meet. However, he still
thinks that his grind is only a fraction of what Nate Mitchell
does in a day. He prefers listening to John Coltrane and good
Detroit and Chicago Deep House during a smooth Sunday brunch.
720
welcomes music lovers of all ages, stages and walks of life to
the grand opening on Saturday, Jan. 22.
“What
makes this business different from the rest is its diversity and
what will be a beautiful blend of music, lifestyle, art, and culture
in one unique place in Pittsburgh,” said Owner and Partner
Paul Dang. “It's a new day in Pittsburgh, y'all!”
