Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.

THE SEED OF THE WOMAN

This past week in Vacation Bible School, we made use of a series entitled, "Pictures of Jesus from the Old Testament." The series included the Passover Lamb, the Scapegoat, the Bronze Serpent, Jonah and the Great Fish, and the Shepherd Psalm. These Old Testament animals and occupations should all bring the Savior Jesus to mind--and for good reason. But they certainly aren't the only ones.

In the Garden of Eden, after the Fall into Sin, the LORD God in speaking to Satan foretold the coming Savior. God promised Satan and his minions that there would be ongoing hostility with the descendants of Adam and Eve. God foretold the defeat of Satan and the removal of His power by One of the descendants of Adam and Eve. He didn’t call Him Jesus, but the Seed of the Woman.

I probably don't have to tell you that Jesus is the Seed of the Woman (but I guess I just did). But I do want you to think about what a fitting title that is for the Lord Jesus. Jesus was conceived by the Holy Ghost and born of the Virgin Mary without the aid of a man, outside of the normal natural biological order. He was the Seed of the Woman.

Jesus couldn't have been conceived in the natural way (that is with Joseph and Mary each providing a part). If Jesus had been just the product of Mary and Joseph's love then He would have been a sinful human being and disqualified from being the Savior of the World. He was conceived by the Holy Ghost and born of the Virgin Mary and thus entered the human race fully human, but without sin.

But the best part of all? Jesus crushed Satan's head and took away His power over us when He lived without sin and then offered Himself to set us free from sin's dominion and the threat of eternal death. Jesus' victory was not without cost. He died.

But the benefit to us is eternal!
