Farm Fresh, August 2024

In this Issue:

A change of seasons!

Dear friends,
Fall is such a busy time and that's especially true here on The Farm. It's the end of the summer harvest and time to plant the fall garden. Making sure you have enough firewood for the winter and for me, feeding my bees so that they have enough honey stored to make it through the cold months ahead.

I want to call special attention to Earthfolk, a group here in the community that has taken on the management of events like our monthly Market Day and who are the hosts of the upcoming dance and drum workshops in October. there's been several of these now and it keeps growing and expanding. if you want to get in touch with your inner rhythm, this is a great weekend to check out!

To highlight my upcoming dance weekend in November, I've added some pictures in this month's newsletter to give you a look at some of the spaces where we gather here in the community, especially our Community Center.
Peace, Douglas

The EarthFolk Presents Drum & Dance Clinic is a community-based and educationally driven 4-day learning event, an opportunity to explore rhythm and technique where all levels of experience are embraced. We strive to provide a diverse array of offerings and create an environment that serves as a safe space to gather, commune, and celebrate life together.

The classes aim to provide participants with the technique, theory, and vocabulary so that they are empowered to bring their creativity and inspiration to shared rhythm experiences. Additional instruction is provided on traditional vocabulary so that participants can broaden their awareness of approaches to music and movement to include a more global perspective and deepen their awareness of other cultures.

The Community Center is also where we share meals and network.

Sacred Ground: The Farm’s cemetery is included in the community tour, where we share a dance to commune with spirits seen and unseen.

The gazebo offers a covered outdoor space with an incredible vista!
Dance space for approximately 40 people.
Fall beauty!

In the last issue I introduced you to Lonnie, one of our newest residents who works at The Farm School. In this podcast, she is talking with April Finerty, K-2nd grade teacher, about leading the second annual Farm School summer program!  Use their tips to start a summer program of your own!

Located in Summertown, Tennessee, The Farm School has been serving The Farm Community and selected students from outside the community since 1971. Learn more on The Farm School’s website: https://www.thefarmschool.community/

Market Day Thriving at The Farm - Lawrence County Advocate
July 22, 2024 By Jonah Storey

“So I love the fact that we have this opportunity to open The Farm to the public, in a sense that, we do the marketing via social media, or we have the flyers, we put the big signs out, and it is a great opportunity for visitors from various states to come here to have a chance to see who The Farm is, where we are, and get to bask in this beautiful community that was started in 1971,” Griffin explained.

“We have a lot of vendors that are here that either live on The Farm or had used to live on The Farm. They are what we call Farm Friends who live just off The Farm. Folks that have learned their craft, possibly at The Farm School, or like the tie dyes, that is the second generation (second generation children of the first people to come to The Farm) doing the ties over there. My other favorite thing is that it is open to off-Farm folks to become vendors. They have some really unique creations or items that you normally wouldn’t see at a typical farm market, artisans’ market.” Read the rest of the article and see the photos.
