THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD
As people have made up gods over the course of history, they have emphasized traits that they themselves would like to have. False gods have been worshiped because they are said to be powerful. In mythology there are stories of revenge and lack of accountability among the gods. False gods make demands. For example, if rain is needed, then sacrifice must be brought to the god. Generally nothing is freely given in the realm of idolatry. Everything comes with a price.
Now examine what the true God emphasizes about Himself. He points out His love and mercy and grace. These are characteristics that are very often viewed as weaknesses, but the Lord points them out as His strengths. He also emphasizes His tenderness. That is the picture that I have in my mind when I think of a shepherd. A shepherd takes care of sheep that are unable to take care of themselves. That is exactly what our Lord does for us. It's not that He is without power. There is no limit to what He can do. Yet He chooses to exercise tenderness and protection and love. He gives help to the helpless.
Read with wonder the 23rd Psalm:
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever."
Why do people love this particular psalm so much? Maybe it is because it shows a side of the Lord that we desperately crave to know about -- His tenderness and love. He responds to the needs of His flock.
