Next Wednesday's speaker is Lyn James LRPS from Wales, who will be presenting his print talk titled Distant Lands. Sorry, but however much I trawl the web, I can't find anything about Lyn and his talk.

Gordon Stirrat has asked me to put in a link to this summer's sailing times to Steep Holme in the Bristol Channel; so if you fancy a trip on the high seas to foreign climes, just click in this link for more details. Gordon did suggest that club members might like to get together to organise a "club outing" to the island; if you're, interested let me know ( newsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk) and I'll see about finding someone to organise it.

SOCIETY OF BIOLOGY’S AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION LAUNCHED
Exhibition of previous shortlisted entries on display at the Royal Institution of Great Britain
Every year the Society of Biology runs an amateur photography competition for inspiring images which explore biology and the natural world. The theme for this year’s competition is ‘Home, habitat and shelter’ and entries will be accepted for the two categories – adult and under 18 – until 31st July.
This will be the 4th year that the competition has run, and the Society hopes that this year’s theme – Home, habitat and shelter – will encourage people to think creatively about the unique ways animals, plants and organisms exploit their environment in order to survive. Photographs could focus on biological research – exploring why and how organisms survive in different environments. Or it could simply capture the beauty of an animal in its natural environment: a lion prowling the savannah or an orca whale content within the coastal waters of the Atlantic Ocean. There are two categories for entering, each with a cash prize:
Photographer of the Year (over 18) – top prize £1,000
Young Photographer of the Year (under 18) – top prize £500
The 2014 competition is sponsored by life science company Eppendorf. Judging for the competition will take place in September and the winners will be announced at the Society’s annual award ceremony in October during Biology Week 2014.
