VALE TONY CULLEN
Scotland Island long time resident, Tony Cullen, passed away at his
Mum’s home early Thursday morning, December 3rd after a long period of
illness. His family were by his side and our thoughts are
with them, particularly Jenny, Rosie, Adrian, Ishbel, his mother
Shirley and the rest of the family who supported him throughout.
Tony and Jenny came to live on Scotland Island in 1987, after having
visited friends and realising what a great place it would be to settle
down and raise a family. They became very active in Island
affairs, with particular concern over all things environmental and
historical. Tony delighted in Pittwater’s natural beauty, its gentle
curving shores and slopes, bush and beaches. He spoke out on specific
issues to raise community awareness. He was very passionate
about the environmental impact that an increased population creates, as
well as the historical context of our land and community and had a
wealth of knowledge to bring to any forum on these subjects.
He and his family made many journeys together, from wilderness areas
within Australia to remote villages in India, treading lightly and
living simply. Since 1981, the family has had a share in a community,
Bundagen, just south of Coffs Harbour. Tony built a dwelling out of
recycled materials, where the family have spent most of their holidays,
enjoying the wonderful stretch of beach, friends and surrounding
environment that has been protected from development as a result of the
co-operative purchase of the land. Tony’s final resting place
will be amongst the trees in the Bundagen burial ground.
Tony loved the Australia Day cricket in Catherine Park and last year
was awarded Man of the Match, here are some photos:
