Hello Firstname

Wednesday, 16 December
Next Wednesday is the last meeting of the year and is the social event of the season - the BPS Christmas Social. Members are asked to bring along a small amount of festive fodder (either solid or liquid) which will be put on the banqueting table for all to consume. Please come along and enter into the festive spirit, this is a good opportunity for the newer members to get to know and chat to some of the older fogies in the Society and for the older fogies to get to chat to someone under 60!

Digital Imaging Group
Next Monday, 14 December, is the final DI Group meeting of the year. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and as usual all members are welcome. Please bring along pictures to share with the other members, either prints or projected (jpegs on memory sticks only please). It doesn't matter whether you want to put up a few pictures in the hopes of getting advice from the assembled masses or you just want to show off, they'll all be well received. I'm sure that Ashwin will have his usual selection of chocolate biscuits on offer too!

A message from Millie

Many members will remember my husband Alan who was a member for many years. He stopped being a member several years ago when his health meant that he could no longer negotiate the steps to the clubrooms at West Mall and generally found getting about very difficult. His health deteriorated progressively over the last couple of years resulting in him being admitted to hospital a few weeks ago and sadly Alan died on Tuesday morning. I would like to thank all of you who have given me help and support throughout these difficult times.
I will not be at BPS for a couple of weeks so would like to wish everyone happy Christmas and a happy New Year.

Millie

Seasonal Felicitations From The Editor
This is the last newsletter before the New Year, so may Carol & I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I'd like to thank all of you who have sent contributions over the last year and a to blow a big raspberry to all who didn't!

Solar Panels
As a lot of members may well know the installation of solar (PV) panels on the roof took place a few weeks ago. The system is already generating up to 9kw of electricity which is being fed back into the grid and for which the club will be receiving an income via what is called a Feed-in Tariff. This tariff gives us 11.3 pence per kwh which is in place for twenty years.

The council made the decision to spend the capital of just under £ 12,000 on the basis of a 6.5 year payback period. There will be an income of approx. £ 25,000 over the 20 year period.

The panels are on the rear of the roof, which generally faces South, as below:-

(Thanks to Dave Lawlan for this)

Mentoring
This is a repeat request.
The club is looking into the possibility of introducing a mentoring scheme for members interested in working towards photographic distinctions such as those of the RPS, PAGB or BPE - to decode these and another acronyms, follow this Link.

Such a scheme would complement the existing Print and Beyond the Wall groups by providing on-going one-to-one or small group support. Mentoring would be by members, for members and open to all, whether new to photography or more experienced, and whether recently joined, or longer-standing members who have hitherto lacked the confidence (or time) to take up the distinctions challenge.

Mentoring is well-established in some other clubs and would hopefully be a way, not only of improving members’ photographic skills, but also of making the club a more friendly, inclusive and mutually supportive place.

As a first step we need to gauge the level of interest in such a scheme. If you might consider becoming a mentee, please follow this link to download and print a short questionnaire, please then complete it and hand to the Society Secretary, John Hudson.

New link in BPS Website
Our Web Meister, Barry, has added a new link to the club website for those interested in macro photography, it is for a Guide to Extreme Macro Photography and can be found in the Links section of the website. As you can see from the picture of Barry on the left, when you get in really close you find that he's not so ugly after all!
Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Items For Sale
If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.

Copy required
If you have anything you think other members would like to know about, such as exhibitions, special events etc. please let me know at newsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk
