PRECIOUS PASSAGES FROM FIRST PETER

1 Peter 2:21-25 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps ... For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

FOLLOWING HIS STEPS

My family and I are on vacation at my parent's home with my brothers and sister and all the kids. Today, we all decided to go for a walk to the park. I was the only one who knew the way to the park, but sure enough, a few of the kids ran ahead at the same time as others lagged behind. It was challenging, to say the least, to keep everyone following the right direction, but after what seemed like a long struggle we finally made it to the park and had a great time.

I have similar frustrations, of myself, in life at times too. Sometimes I get way too far ahead of myself and get mixed up as to where I'm going and who I really should be following. Other times, I feel like I can't keep up or am just being lazy. Distractions everywhere! Yes, the pavement can be tough and the sun hot at times. Yes, the childish behaviors around me tempt me to lose my temper and control. But what a precious truth my Savior has reminded me of again today. He doesn't get frustrated with me when I behave in a similar way!

Too often my sinful soul wanders -- like a stubborn or clueless sheep going his own way. But at the same time, there is the calm and steady guidance of my Shepherd. Jesus watches over me and leaves me a clear trail to follow in His loving Words, even when the path is tough, even when the sun is hot and problems and trials wear my patience thin. Jesus leaves me an example of love and mercy, humility and forgiveness. With joy I follow in His steps -- and pray to help lead others to our destination of eternal life in Christ our Savior.

And so the words of the familiar hymn echo in my mind:

Jesus lead Thou on till our rest is won;
And although the way be cheerless,
we will follow calm and fearless.
Guide us by Thy hand, to our fatherland.
(The Lutheran Hymnal, 410:1)
