The 2012 Sacred Springs Powwow will honor a thousand-year-old prophecy about the eagle and condor with storytelling, flute playing, Aztec dance, and even an official t-shirt, on October 6 from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM at Aquarena Center, 921 Aquarena Springs Drive, San Marcos, Texas.

The eagle and condor prophecy exists among several Native groups such as the Andean Quechua, New Mexican Hopi, Guatemalan, Honduran and Mexican Maya, Ecuadorian Shuar, and other traditional indigenous cultures of North, Central, and South America. One of the many versions of that prophecy states that when the eagle and condor fly together again, balance and proper order will be restored. Some people interpret this as the coming together of indigenous people from the north with those from the south to renew their covenant with Mother Earth.

"There are hundreds of events, ceremonies, and activities that are taking place across the Americas regarding this prophecy," says Dr. Mario Garza, board chair of Indigenous Cultures Institute. "Just two weeks ago the Peace and Dignity Journey northern runners came through San Marcos on their way to meet the southern runners coming from South America."

Every four years since 1992, the Peace and Dignity Journey participants begin their voyage across the continents. Runners start simultaneously from both ends of the Western Hemisphere in Chickaloon, Alaska and Tierra del Fuego, Argentina running from community to community, joining together for a final gathering in Guatemala. The 2012 run is dedicated to water, reminding those who have forgotten that water is an important and shared resource for all.

At 2:00 PM the powwow will feature a special presentation on the condor and eagle prophecy with storytelling by Dr. Garza accompanied by the Native American flute, followed by Cuicani In Xochitl, the acclaimed Aztec dance company from Dallas. Dr. Garza's story chronicles the fateful events that caused the eagle and condor to cry tears forming the sacred land bridge between the Americas, and then separate for five hundred years until their destined reunion.

The official powwow T-shirt for the 2012 Sacred Springs Powwow will also feature a unique and dramatic image of the condor and eagle theme.

Over 100 Native American dancers, artists, and food vendors are expected for this extraordinary cultural celebration set along the shores of Spring Lake. For a list of vendors and other vendor related information CLICK HERE.

This Powwow also honors Lucky Tomblin who initiated the first Sacred Springs Powwow in 1995. Eagle & Condor featured on official powwow t-shirts

Design donted by celebrated artist
Juan Martinez

The image for the 2012 Sacred Springs Powwow t-shirt is a powerful and dramatic representation of the Eagle and Condor Prophecy, and will be printed on red shirts, sold at the powwow.

The divided image of the Native man displays the feathers of an eagle headdress on the left and the ceremonial head piece of the ancient Mesoamerican culture on the right.

On the left are the teepees, horses, animal spirits and the majestic eagle that are often associated with northern tribes. On the right is the round calendar, a pyramid, snake figure, mask and the mighty condor that represent the southern tribes.  This symbolic meeting and blending of two multi-cultural groups of people speaks to the oneness of humanity.

One of the interpretations of the Eagle and Condor Prophecy is that when the eagle and the condor fly together again, balance will be restored to Mother Earth.
This coming together of two disparate birds – or peoples, ideologies, perspectives, ways of life – can happen when each recognizes the value of the other and they can find a balance between them.  We are all related.

Proceeds from t-shirt sales will help to fund this Sacred Springs Powwow.

Special thanks to Juan Martinez for his very special contribution to our Powwow.
