Regálame Una Noche Sony/Tropisounds /$15.98 (original import) Originally released: 2005 Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA COLOMBIA; COLOMBIA EditorsPick: Back in stock! Produced with the genius of Diego Gale in Colombia, Regálame Un Noche is a near perfect string of catchy salsa compositions that allows this seasoned singer to show what he's made of. And he does. Maelo gets better and better with each release, and Regálame is a tight ball of radio-ready swing with plenty of hooks. Not over-produced, Regálame's fine arrangements (by Gale, Orlando Libreros and Rey Arturo González) allow space for each note to articulate. Terrific coro section as well. And when he sings "Otra vez...Maelo Ruiz," you just know it's time to dance. |

Afrocubism Nonesuch /$18.98 (original import) Originally released: 2010 Category: LATIN JAZZ; AFRO-CUBAN JAZZ EditorsPick: A simply astounding blend of Cuban and African flavors. The Africans didn't show up for the session in Havana, but the Cubans recorded anyway and the result was the Buena Vista Social Club! So now, 14 years later, producer Nick Gold revives the original idea with Afrocubism, this new stunning project made up of esteemed Cuban and African musicians. Very Highly Recommended!

Xiomara Laugart has a peculiar mastery to reveal, not only her vocal virtues and flexibility, but a special sound, fluently liquid and garrulous. Her range is such that the jazz influences seem to be a natural extension of her repertoire. She takes on each style of music and embraces it with her own stamp and authentic flare. La Voz is her second release for Chesky Records. ... continues (BP)

This Changüí-Salsa-Timba project is one of the best hip-shaking Cuban releases we have heard this year. Revé, who continues to push the envelope he inherited from his father, never fails to deliver the goods. And he certainly knows how to pick his singers: Susel Orieta Gomez Perez (watch out for her, she's amazing), Dagoberto Vazquez Valdez, Pascual Matos Aguirre, and Emilio Frias Peña "El Niño."
