Acts 2:42 They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
DEVOTED TO THE APOSTLES' TEACHING
We notice in this verse how the word and sacraments were at the heart of all the activities in the early church. Because these were the things that the Spirit had used to draw them, these were the things that the people cared about as they continued to live their faith under the Spirit's influence.
The Christians listened carefully to the teachings which the apostles of Christ had shared. The apostles, after all, had not just preached their own words, but had shared the words of the Lord. The many miraculous signs and wonders they did among the people attested to this.
As the new Christians learned the truth of God from the apostles, they repeated those teachings in their midst. All their activities centered on the word of Christ. They heard that word. They meditated on it. They proclaimed it themselves. They made the word the main thing in their churches.
Likewise we want to make sure that the word of God is always the main thing in our churches. We do not want to be led astray by worldly influences that would have us believe that word does not need to be the main thing for us. May it be said of us as it was said of them: "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching."
