Luke 10:38-42 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."
ONE THING IS NEEDED
Have you ever thought you really needed to have something, only to realize later that you did not need it all that much? For example, when a tremendous tornado ravaged their town and destroyed their homes, some of the residents of Moore, Oklahoma, learned that the things they thought they really needed were not all that necessary after all. Having lost so many of their material things, they learned that there were things more important to them than television sets or fancy kitchen tables.
The truth is, we are not always very good at figuring out what we really need. We often treat certain things as absolutely necessary when they are not, and we neglect things in our lives that we actually do need.
Only one thing is really needed Jesus said. Mary had chosen it. She had chosen to sit at Jesus' feet and to listen to His word. That was the one thing that was really necessary: to listen to what Jesus had to say.
Why are Christ's words so important? Because He has the words of eternal life. He has the words that can calm our troubled hearts when we are searching for peace with God. He says, "You're forgiven." He has the words that can cheer us when we're lonely. He says, "I am with you always." He has the words that move our hearts to believe in Him for salvation. His words are the one thing needed.
