John 8:12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."

THE CHRISTIAN COURSE: LOOK TO THE SON (1)

When navigating the ocean without instruments, as the people of the Polynesian Islands have been doing for centuries, there is, above all, one thing that stands out as the truest and best indicator of direction: the sun. At sunrise and at sunset the sun gives the navigator a bearing on due east and due west. There are other things that navigators will use to find their way, but the sun is the most important. Every morning and evening the navigator can very accurately verify his course based on the position of the sun.

As Christians, we have the same navigational system as we follow the Christian course through this life. Most importantly, we look to the Son -- not the S-U-N, but the S-O-N, Jesus Christ. To maintain our course, above all else our attention needs to be fixed upon Jesus. He is the one who always guides us on the right path, and He is the only one who leads us to our final, heavenly destination. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He has blazed the trail of righteousness so that we sinners can stand with sins forgiven and follow Him to eternal life.
