September 2016

The Fall Equinox will occur Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 10:21 AM
Often the fall is associated with a lower mood. The days are shorter and the length and quality of light are less.
It can be natural to mourn the loss of long sunlit summer days, the profusion of flowers, and the plentiful summer fruits, to say nothing of vacations at the beach!
As a therapist, I often hear my clients apologizing for their tears. I tell them there is nothing to apologize for. In fact, here is what psychiatrist Judith Orloff says about tears: "Tears release stress hormones and help you heal. As you cry, your body expels guilt and tension. This helps you let it all go. Don't fight the surrender of crying. Let tears cleanse stress from your body."
Tears also lubricate your eyes, remove irritants, and contain antibodies that fight infection. "Emotional tears stimulate the production of endorphins, our bodies' natural pain killers that help us recover from trauma. Crying helps the body excrete stress hormones. Along with physical detoxification, emotional tears heal a broken heart. Crying is necessary to work through grief. Let your tears purify suffering and negativity."
Let's not forget about laughter, another great way to express emotions! Laughter is also healing. It releases muscle tension and fatigue. It elevates immune response and endorphins, and takes the edge off stress, anxiety and depression. "Let laughter reveal the light that lives in even the darkest places".  Sometimes when you're feeling down, it's hard to find something to laugh about. That's when it can be helpful to watch a funny movie! Have a good belly laugh and feel your stress release!

Recipe of the Month
Carrot Ramen Noodle and Miso Soup
As Fall approaches, we often tend to start thinking of warmer foods. This recipe involves a little cooking, but is still quite healthy!
Serves 2
Ingredients:
6 spring onions, finely sliced, retaining the sliced green ends to garnish
2 TB coconut oil
1 inch piece of fresh ginger root, peeled and diced
2 garlic cloves, diced
1/2 - 1 fresh red chili, finely sliced (to taste) plus extra to serve
10 oz. shiitake mushrroms, tops sliced and stems chopped
3 cups vegetable stock
2 large carrots
2 - 3 tsp. miso paste
1 tsp. tamari
juice of 1 lime
2 handfuls of greens such as bok choy, kale, and/or spinach, shredded
1 small handufl of cilantro (leaves and stalks) and a few fresh mint leaves, finely chopped
Directions
1. In a large saucepan, fry the white parts of the spring onions in the coconut oil with the ginger, garlic and chili over a medium heat for 2 minutes until softened. Stir in the mushrooms and fry for a further 2 minutes.
2. Pour in the vegetable broth and bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, spiralize the carrots, or peel into strips with a julienne peeler or standard vegetable peeler, then slice in half lengthwise.
4. Add some seaweed if you like and warm through for one minute. Turn off the heat and stir in the miso paste, tamari and lime juice and then drop the carrot noodles and greens into the broth.
5. Serve topped with the chopped cilantro and mint leaves and the reserved green parts of the spring onions. Add extra chili if you like, or a drizzle of hot sauce!
