Native Plant Conservation Campaign News: Celebrate Endangered Species Day and Ecosystem Services!
May 20, 2016
May 20 is Endangered Species Day in the U.S. To mark this occasion many organizations are highlighting the value of biological diversity and the Endangered Species Act. Some examples:
A coalition of conservation, environmental and wildlife organizations led by the Endangered Species Coalition held a Capitol Hill Briefing Wednesday featuring E.O. Wilson and Aaron Bernstein of Harvard University and Stephen Polasky of the University of Minnesota.
The Briefing focused on the importance of the Endangered Species Act in conserving biological diversity and the Ecosystem Services it supports, particularly in agricultural production, clean air and water, medicine, and climate regulation.
The Briefing was sponsored by Democrats in the House Committee on Natural Resources and was attended by more than 100 scientists, Hill staff, and others. House members Jared Huffman and Debbie Dingell also spoke.

The Center for Biological Diversity released a report Thursday showing how legal protections for endangered plants and animals helped save important and beautiful wildland ecosystems throughout the U.S., including the Longleaf Pine Ecosystem in the
Southeastern U.S. and the Sauta Cave National Wildlife Refuge in Alabama.
