SILENT NIGHT, HOLY NIGHT:
... HEAVENLY HOSTS SING ALLELUIA! ...

The contrast is remarkable, isn't it? The angels who apparently had nothing for themselves to gain by the birth of Jesus cannot contain themselves but break forth in praise of God. Did they really sing "Hallelujah!"? Although the word is not recorded as part of their outburst, we are told they were praising God, which is what "Hallelujah!" means.

Perhaps more remarkable is the fact that they would appear and express their praise to God out in a field, with no altar, pews, or organ. We spend a lot of time preparing to sing God's praises at Christmastime, and it is fitting that we do so, but not because it is such a benefit to God. He is justly praised at all times and everywhere. But it is to our benefit (salutary) that we should recognize and receive with thanksgiving not only our daily bread, but also the Bread from heaven.

Also worthy of remark is what the angel army did not say: "Mankind is so loving and considerate at this time of the year." For them it was not a festival celebrating the better qualities of human beings. The glory, all of it, belonged to God! Our sinful human nature has no use for this kind of festival, can see no use for it unless it can be turned into something that honors people who "keep Christmas" best. The angels honored God because He kept Christmas as no one else could. He did more in a stable than we could do in the most glorious place on earth, moon, or Mars. He kept all His promises in Christ, who is our Peace. It is His good will, His favor, that rests upon us all. Glory to God in the highest!
