CAMBRIDGE BEAD FAIR REPORT

Cambridge has always been very packed, but this time it was only really busy the first 2-hours – maybe people were away for Easter. We’ll be back at Harston Sunday 1st October. Click the online newsletter for pictures.

SUZANNE DEBOW JEWELLERY

Gemstone Gallery owner Suzanne DeBow was a public relations and marketing executive prior to becoming a jewellery designer. She grew up in London during the 60s, at a time when art, fashion and music were exploding.

Although her career was in public relations, her transition to jewellery-making wasn’t difficult. She had studied art and design and enjoys beautiful jewellery. “The design process has always been very exciting to me,” says Suzanne. “I love to see where a design will take me; I don’t always know before I begin.”

Her passion for jewellery-making surfaced when she came across a stunningly stone necklace at an upscale Manhattan department store. “I remember how enamored I was with the necklace. It was made with the most exquisite semi-precious stones. I loved everything about them — their shape, size, colours and even their texture,” she said. The necklace was beyond her price range, and nothing else came close. “I returned to the store twice hoping for a sale, but no such luck! Then I decided to make it myself. It worked. The experience was so enjoyable I made this my second career.” The compliments she received for her first necklace confirmed she was on the right track. Before long she launched Gemstone Gallery and its website: mygemstonesgallery.com.

MR & MRS BEAD’S EASTER NORTHERN ITALIAN TRIP

We love Italy! This time we spent 5-days in Lake Garda & Venice. Flying to Verona, driving around the Lake, then 1 1/2-hour train (just £10 each) from Verona to Venice. Staying at a beautiful hotel overlooking the Lake at Limone, and leaving from Venice last Sunday.

Italian Design Bead Jewellery
In Italy, beads are everywhere in the shop windows. However, beaded jewellery is not cheap like in the UK. Most necklaces in these window-pictures are around €75 – and the Murano glass beads are €9 each, that’s per bead not string!

MURANO ISLAND GLASS BEADS

Murano beads are Millefiori, translates from Italian to “thousand flowers”. Traditionally, each bead was handmade under the flame, using glass rods to produce a colourful mosaic effect. They were first crafted in Venice around the 15th century.

Glass rods are made like candy rock with multiple colours. The colours at this stage are only viewable from the ends. The bead maker then cuts thin slices off while the glass is still hot and press them down to form mosaic patterns.

On Murano Island, signs say the beads ‘Aren’t Chinese’. However, although the beads are made locally, they look exactly the same as we buy in China! Click to see our Millefiori Beads and our many Glass Beads.

2023 BEAD FAIRS

We’re doing less Gem n Bead Fairs, and more of our own single day shows. Most of our own shows are free entry & free refreshments. They’re also more busy, giving visitors a buzz and chance to share ideas together! If you feel we’re not near you, let me know and I’ll consider your location.
