Los Nombres Asterisk (original import) / CD Reissued: 2012 Category: LATIN SOUL/BOOGALOO; LATIN SOUL, CLASSIC 60s or 70s EditorsPick: One part War, two parts Santana, a dash of Motown, immersed in a rich Puerto Rican stock, the Nombres were the undisputed kings of Northern Ohio's rust-belt barrios. Following successive explosions of brown-eyed and Latin soul in Los Angeles and New York in the mid and late '60s, Lorain, Ohio's Boricua underdogs went on a recording tear in nearby Cleveland, going all-in on a series of no-budget recordings at Boddie and Way Out. With a voice that rivaled any on the Fania roster, Willie Marquez led the rotating cast of Latino teens through numerous underfunded recording sessions for the Day-Wood, Beth, and Lorain Sounds imprints, the lo-fi fruits of which are compiled here. The Best Of Chorolo Y Su Combo Rareza Music (original import) / CD Originally released: 2012 Category: LATIN SOUL/BOOGALOO; LATIN SOUL, CLASSIC 60s or 70s EditorsPick: Chorolo was born Ramón González on June 2, 1923, in Moca, Puerto Rico. In 1958, Chorolo formed his own group, which remained in New York until 1980. His first recording for the Gema label, Ven a Bailar (1965), featured Pedro González on piano improvisations and contained the hits Me Voy Pa' Las Villas and the guaracha Pobrecitas Las Mujeres. In 1966-67, he had formed a small group in which his brother Wito sang and played bass while also playing with many other groups. Johnny Rose manned the conga, the brothers Tato and Papi Nieves played trumpet, along with Cristobal Acevedo and Rafi Martinez (vocals) and the Panamanian Pedro González (piano). Chorolo in Latin Sounds (Boreal) delivered the guaguancó tracks Borinquen Tiene Guaguancó, Guaguancó Para Gozar, and Figurando el Guaguancó, as well as the popular Cuban music of the time that inspired this release. Bobby Valentin played second trumpet in the combo and a teenage Willie Colón began his career as a cencerro player with Chorolo. - Excerpted from the article Chorolo and Wito: Two Brothers United in Music by Nelson Gonzalez, Latin Beat Magazine
Manny Corchado And His Orchestra Feat. Tito Jiménez Rareza Music (original import) / CD Originally released: 2012 Category: LATIN SOUL/BOOGALOO; LATIN SOUL, CLASSIC 60s or 70s EditorsPick: ...interesting Latin sounds that timbales player Manny Corchado and his orchestra cooked up for this late 60's Decca release. The gyrating bomba song "Farfallota" is one of the most rhythmically-interesting tracks on the album. Bomba is a Puerto Rican musical style with African origins in which drummer and dancer engage in a "rhythmic dialogue" with the drummer attempting to mimic, musically, the movements of the dancer. The album closes with "Manny's Guaguanco"—a short and torrid little song that expertly condenses what feels like ten minutes of musical information into a two-and-a-half-minute sprint to the end of the record. One of the things I love about this album—and Latin music in general—is that, rhythmically, it is never boring. The interplay of instruments seems to always yield some new and unexpected combination of sounds, allowing the music to not just evade the predictability that plagues less rhythmically-enlightened music (e.g., tacky funk), but also inspire new ways of thinking about rhythm, movement, space, and time.
(http://salsasoneando2010.blogspot.com) (label)
