LOS NOMBRES
Los Nombres
Asterisk (original import) / CD
Reissued: 2012
Category: LATIN SOUL/BOOGALOO; LATIN SOUL, CLASSIC 60s or 70s
EditorsPick: One part War, two parts Santana, a dash of Motown, immersed in a rich Puerto Rican stock, the Nombres were the undisputed kings of Northern Ohio's rust-belt barrios. Following successive explosions of brown-eyed and Latin soul in Los Angeles and New York in the mid and late '60s, Lorain, Ohio's Boricua underdogs went on a recording tear in nearby Cleveland, going all-in on a series of no-budget recordings at Boddie and Way Out. With a voice that rivaled any on the Fania roster, Willie Marquez led the rotating cast of Latino teens through numerous underfunded recording sessions for the Day-Wood, Beth, and Lorain Sounds imprints, the lo-fi fruits of which are compiled here. AFRO BOP ALLIANCE
Una Más
OA2 Records / CD
Originally released: 2011
Category: LATIN JAZZ; LATIN JAZZ
EditorsPick: “Listening to the exquisite playing and arranging of the Afro Bop Alliance is always an experience. The mix they've achieved is so balanced you never feel the music is too Latin to be jazz, or too jazzy to be Latin.” -Paquito D'Rivera.
The 2008 Latin Grammy Award winners for "Latin Jazz Album of the Year," return with their all-star fueled big band for another powerful recording of dynamic new compositions. With special guests including Dave Samuels and Roberto Quintero, they perform works by Luis Perdomo, Hector Martignon, Dave Samuels, Mike Pope and Vince Norman.
"Una Más is an outstanding set of Latin jazz from the D.C. area's finest Latin big band. The band makes use of surprisingly complex arrangements of largely new compositions, both Latin pieces transformed into somewhat jazzier arrangements (as in the opening "Golpe de Cumaco") and jazz pieces given a Latin flavor (as in main arranger Vince Norman's "El Otoño"). Rounded out with a few Latinized classic pieces from the likes of Cal Tjader and Benny Golson, the band swings strongly through a variety of Afro-bop, post-bop, and modern Latin jazz realms. The key here isn't just in the arrangements, though. It's in the performances, with the group displaying much of what separates a modern big band from a classic-styled big band -- an ability to create large-scale fanfares and harmonies as a group, but to back down and allow long solos to shine..." - Adam Greenberg, AllMusic

ORQUESTA EL MACABEO
El Entierro
Discos De Hoy / CD
Originally released: 2011
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; PUERTO RICO
EditorsPick: The rockers of Puerto Rican indy salsa are back with El Entierro.

Cuba Music Records (original import) / CD
Originally released: 2011
Category: SALSA/SON; TIMBA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Combinacion de La Habana comes back with a revelation of Cuban timba, their latest and much-anticipated 2011 album: “Farandula Tropical”.
The brand new production from Combinacion holds 10 awesome tracks, most of them composed by the genius director and pianist Gerson Valdez (Bebo’s nephew and second cousin of Chucho Valdes)... Combinacion is enjoying a massive wave of Cuban dancers’ esteem, the kind of appreciation of the sold-out kind, which puts the band among the greatest Cuban timba orchestras of the moment. “Farandula Tropical” sees the involvement of a remarkable Tirso Duarte in the song “Ajustate el cinturon”, surely one of the hits, together with “Asì soy yo”, “Farandula Tropical”, “No se como decirte que te quiero”, “Las mujeres de la actualidad”. Songs that have already a big success such as “Ponte pa la pelicula” and “La Discrecion”, which have been revealed in the live concerts, finally get to the audience, optimized in this new record production...

CHOROLO Y SU COMBO
The Best Of Chorolo Y Su Combo
Rareza Music (original import) / CD
Originally released: 2012
Category: LATIN SOUL/BOOGALOO; LATIN SOUL, CLASSIC 60s or 70s
EditorsPick: Chorolo was born Ramón González on June 2, 1923, in Moca, Puerto Rico. In 1958, Chorolo formed his own group, which remained in New York until 1980. His first recording for the Gema label, Ven a Bailar (1965), featured Pedro González on piano improvisations and contained the hits Me Voy Pa' Las Villas and the guaracha Pobrecitas Las Mujeres. In 1966-67, he had formed a small group in which his brother Wito sang and played bass while also playing with many other groups. Johnny Rose manned the conga, the brothers Tato and Papi Nieves played trumpet, along with Cristobal Acevedo and Rafi Martinez (vocals) and the Panamanian Pedro González (piano). Chorolo in Latin Sounds (Boreal) delivered the guaguancó tracks Borinquen Tiene Guaguancó, Guaguancó Para Gozar, and Figurando el Guaguancó, as well as the popular Cuban music of the time that inspired this release. Bobby Valentin played second trumpet in the combo and a teenage Willie Colón began his career as a cencerro player with Chorolo. - Excerpted from the article Chorolo and Wito: Two Brothers United in Music by Nelson Gonzalez, Latin Beat Magazine

MANNY CORCHADO AND HIS ORCHESTRA
Manny Corchado And His Orchestra Feat. Tito Jiménez
Rareza Music (original import) / CD
Originally released: 2012
Category: LATIN SOUL/BOOGALOO; LATIN SOUL, CLASSIC 60s or 70s
EditorsPick: ...interesting Latin sounds that timbales player Manny Corchado and his orchestra cooked up for this late 60's Decca release. The gyrating bomba song "Farfallota" is one of the most rhythmically-interesting tracks on the album. Bomba is a Puerto Rican musical style with African origins in which drummer and dancer engage in a "rhythmic dialogue" with the drummer attempting to mimic, musically, the movements of the dancer. The album closes with "Manny's Guaguanco"—a short and torrid little song that expertly condenses what feels like ten minutes of musical information into a two-and-a-half-minute sprint to the end of the record. One of the things I love about this album—and Latin music in general—is that, rhythmically, it is never boring. The interplay of instruments seems to always yield some new and unexpected combination of sounds, allowing the music to not just evade the predictability that plagues less rhythmically-enlightened music (e.g., tacky funk), but also inspire new ways of thinking about rhythm, movement, space, and time.

JESUS CEPEDA Y SU GRUPO ABC
De La Raíz A La Salsa Los Embajadores De La Malaza
Fundación Rafael Cepeda / CD
Originally released: 2011
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; PUERTO RICO
(http://salsasoneando2010.blogspot.com) (label)
