We kindly invite you to join us on the 9th on November for Expedition #1- Sand Drift, the first public expedition on the Sand Motor as cultural phenomenon. During Expedition#1 we connect arts, science and audience to focus on the shifting relations of man and nature. We invite you to experience the new work called 'Untangling the tides' of our first artist in residence Zoro Feigl, to engage with the passionate scientific approach by coastal scientists, to explore the scope of the Sand Motor yourself during the workshop 'Expedition Eridanos' by philosopher Bram Esser and designer Francois Lombarts and reflect on currents elsewhere, such as moving sands in Nida (Lithuania) with our new resident Theun Karelse.
We conclude the day with an informal discussion and dinner!

ABOUT:

ZORO FEIGL PRESENTS HIS NEW WORK 'UNTANGLING THE TIDES'
During his residency at Villa Ockenburg Zoro Feigl was often out on the Sand Motor. This immense beach where scientists are researching the tides, currents and sand deposition inspired Feigl to create 'Untangling the tides'. Feigls work is characterized by movement and physical phenomena. Moreover, his work often evolves around tracks these may cause. It is therefore not surprising that the rising and falling of the sea can be recognized in the new work he created especially for Satellietgroep. The sea shapes the beach and the beach shapes the sea. Feigl shows the power of repeating patterns with moving rope in an elongated installation.
With special thanks to Marcel Stive - coastal morphologist TU Delft and Jan de Boer - Ekofish Urk.

LINK TO PASSIONATE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH ON THE SAND MOTOR
The Sand Motor is a large pilot project for natural coastal reinforcement, called 'building with nature'. Wind and currents spread the sand along the coast, thereby strengthening the coast and creating new space for recreation and nature. The alterations in its shape have largely matched expectations so far. On the basis of the initial observations, researchers also notice that more habitats have been created for flora and fauna as a result of the arrival of the Sand Motor. The Sand Motor has proven appealing for outdoor activities like kitesurfing.

WORKSHOP EXPEDITION ERIDANOS ON THE SAND MOTOR
https://www.facebook.com/ExpeditionEridanos
Expedition Eridanos is an ongoing fieldresearch by philosopher Bram Esser and designer Francois Lombarts to engage public into a tactile guided experience. They host a special workshop how to become an explorer in the known world, following the technique of narrative research which they apply during Expedition Eridanos: travelling on foot along the shores from the innovative Sand Motor in the Netherlands to the Northern Baltic Sea. Following the source of the sand that once formed the foundations of the Netherlands they seek to understand and unlock the coastal landscape, not by unraveling myths, but by creating new ones.

NEW RESIDENT THEUN KARELSE
Amsterdam based artist Theun Karelse will explore the mysteries of the Sand Motor in November and December as the second long term artist in residence in the series after Zoro Feigl. In continuation of his residency last year on the Curonian Spit at Nida Art Colony in Lithuania, Karelse will research coastal ecologies, citizen science and exploring the aesthetics and mechanics of man-made wilderness.

VILLA OCKENBURGH
Satellietgroep is proud that the first residents will be hosted at Villa Ockenburgh on walking distance from the Sand Motor. Villa Ockenburgh is an old country house located at the very edge of The Hague near the dunes and sea. It houses thirteen studios and a project space and is the base of operation for artists initiative Location Z, which is founded on the idea that it’s meaningful to bring highly distinctive vocabularies (contemporary art, music, science) together in the same space. The program, the studios and the project space together form an infrastructure for experimentation, confrontation, and reflection.

Satellietgroep (The Hague, 2006) explores through arts the social and ecological impact of the sea and coastal transitions on people, communities and environments in The Netherlands and abroad. The aim is to enhance public and professional awareness on coastal transitions. Long term projects are 'Badgast' - artist in residency program at The Hague/Scheveningen (since 2009), and 'Now Wakes The Sea', the international exchange residency program in collaboration with international cultural partners (since 2012). In 2014/15 Satellietgroep collaborates with Nida Art Colony in Lithuania.
In the programs artist in residencies are used as a research method to enable artists and scientists to do fieldwork and to work on site with local partners, coastal communities and experts in order to map out and research the current status of coastal transitions and to generate new narratives and perspectives. The programs function as an alternative source for collecting. Satellietgroep collects the intangible local knowledge derived from the artistic and scientific projects. During these residency programs new concepts and works are developed that we connect and contextualize with existing works for public events like traveling film festivals, exhibitions, workshops and presentations at expert conferences. By interconnecting coastal communities, arts and science we share local knowledge on global level to gain sustainable insights on coastal transitions that transcend local and national issues.
Since September 2014 Satellietgroep extended the area for artistic coastal research to the Sand Engine (Zandmotor) south of The Hague (NL).
