Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 3 March

Next week we welcome Sharon and Robert Prenton Jones who specialise in composite images. They use a home studio to capture many of the people in their composite images with control of the lighting using a variety of light sources.

Robert begins the evening by demonstrating how, by taking his inspiration from his interest in Renaissance paintings, and the use of light in them, he is able to very effectively recreate this in his images. His early images show the use of candlelight as the light source. But with the need to keep challenging himself he moved onto trying to effectively incorporate partly hidden light sources. His images demonstrate the immense thought to detail required to be really successful with composite images.

The final image he will show is his interpretation of De Vinci’s Last Supper, which took him over a year to complete. Each person in the image being photographed separately in all the different positions of the different apostles in the original painting before finally deciding on their final position in the image. To position all the figures successfully around the table produces approximately 100 layers in Photoshop.

In the second half, Sharon will demonstrate a completely different take on composite images. She has based much of her recent work on Celtic myths and legends, which she produced in a panel for her FIAP. The figures she used were cut out from their original backgrounds using Topaz Mask rather than Photoshop. The figures were then placed on blurred and textured backgrounds which she very clearly demonstrates, step by step, how to create in Photoshop. Sharon uses a combination of Gaussian Blur, Transform and Liquify effects typically used on separate layers. She also varies the layer Blending modes and Opacity to achieve the desired effect.

Competitions Structure Review
Periodically the competition secretaries review the issues arising from the club competitions as they are presently running, with a view to making any changes and improvements that members might feel desirable.  As part of the review, we canvas the views of members themselves. However, collecting members’ views in the present situation is not easy, hence this Newsletter note.
The present structure has four classes for the bi-monthly competition: Club, Intermediate, Advanced and Prescribed, with the latter open only to advanced class members.  The Annual Competitions are of a similar pattern without the Prescribed class but with a Nature class which is open to all members.  This structure seems to work well with around 50 members participating at some stage each year.  The images entered in the competitions have several times had to be culled as their number has been excessive for good judging.
We wish to hear your views about the BPS competitions as they are presently run, and any ideas you have for improvements or changes.  We would like you to email us with your satisfaction, or otherwise, as to how things are and, in particular, whether one change which has been mooted would receive your support.  This is that members of the Intermediate class should be allowed to enter an image into the Prescribed class in the Bi-monthly competition. Such a change would not be straightforward as it may well, for example, mean that members’ entry to the Intermediate class ‘Open’ section would need to be reduced by one, as is presently the case with the Advanced class.
We look forward to hearing your views.

Western Counties Photographic Federation 2021 Members' Exhibition
Closing date Saturday 6th March 2021
Just a reminder that the WCPF Members' Exhibition entry closes on March 6th. If you haven't entered any images yet then there is still time to do so. If you have uploaded images but not “finalized” your entry you need to do so before the closing date.
If you have decided to let your 2020 entry carry forward to the 2021 selection and you have not “un-finalized” your entry, you don't need to do anything
You can access the exhibition website by clicking on the link below where you can view the entry terms and conditions, including class definitions.
There will also be a link to the entry system on the Exhibitions page of the WCPF website (don't forget that the WCPF website has moved to www.thewcpf.com). Just click the Exhibition Tab for the Members' Exhibition.
Your login username is dannyheaton and your password is the same as when you last registered for the exhibition. If you can't remember your password, just click the 'Remind Me' button on the login page and you'll be able to set up a new password.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Make Money For BPS Every Time You Shop On Amazon!
Now we're all still in lockdown, the thought of on-line shopping must be looming large in many members' minds. It's worth remembering that if you so wish, each and every one of you can support BPS with every purchase you make on Amazon by using Amazon Smile. Click on the link below – then it’s self-explanatory.
Shopping using Smile is no different to your normal Amazon shopping and costs you nothing, it's just that you need to tell it that you wish to use Smile and then we get some pennies!
