Wednesday 6 March

Our speaker next week is BPS member Bob Phelps, who will be presenting his talk called Art and Photography.

Bob is interested in deriving creative images from photographs of everyday scenes.

According to ChatGPT, ‘Photography captures reality with technical precision, freezing moments in time with clarity and objectivity. On the other hand, art transcends the literal, embracing subjectivity and interpretation. While photography is a powerful tool for storytelling, art ventures into the realm of imagination, provoking thought and evoking emotions.
But is there a clear boundary between art and photography? Can we tell whether an image has been made by an artist or a photographer? How have artists used photography in painting? What happens when photographers try to recreate paintings? And how does the new technology of generative AI affect this discussion?

This presentation is an interactive one, with audience discussion, where we will look at contrasting examples of art and photography and develop our own thoughts on the divergence or convergence of these two creative activities.

Here are a few images from the talk:

DI Group
DI Group Meeting – Clubroom/Zoom - 11 March, 7.30 pm

The last DIG meeting in February was very well attended and seven presentations kept us all engrossed with what is possible with achieving exciting results when creating images.

The next meeting of the DI group is on Monday 11 March in just over a week's time. It is in the usual format of presentations submitted by members. This is the advance information to invite all BPS members to share their images in an informal atmosphere. It is also a good opportunity to show your work or to invite comments on your images from your fellow members, especially if you are planning to submit them for competitions or exhibitions. You are also welcome to just sit and watch the proceedings if you wish.

For the submission of the images I would still like to maintain the current system of sending them to me before the meeting. It allows me to prepare the presentation folder in advance for a smooth presentation. When you are ready, please email your images for presentation (about 2 to 20 minutes) to reach me by 6pm-ish Sunday 10 March. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). To show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox link if convenient.

PSA Results
This is the latest report from our External Competitions Secretary, Mike Martin:

Photographic Society of America (PSA) Print Competition results

Another successful outcome in Round 2 -11 of our 20 print entries received awards!   Congratulations to everyone.

However, only five clubs chose to send images to Dubai for this round – given they can enter “make-up” images in the third and final Round in April, it’s still all to play for albeit we are in a very strong position in all five print competitions.

WCPF Council Meeting & Talk

It is worth mentioning that for anyone that’s been to WCPF events held in the Golf Center at Bovey Tracy, this is new venue, it’s quite a bit closer for us northerners in Bristol, but there aren’t the same catering facilities available so a packed lunch is recommended if you are staying all day.
