Fabric Wearing Thin
Joy Ike I feel it
Fabric wearing thin Almost at the point where no one cares if they win We just want our peace To pay off mortgages and lease To step outside the front door and freely walk our streets But the dissonance is palpable Seemingly insurmountable The wreckage and the carnage and the death around incalculable Communities collapsible No credit, clout, or capital Aimless thoughts and ringing shots make dreaming dreams impractical We see it Fabric wearing thin Unable to hold the weight of where we are and where we've been Tethered to false hope the past is coming back again And growing tired of waiting for the future to begin And soon enough it will give up The threads will snap in two And all the instability will finally fall through And when the bottom completely out, readily gives way. Many will need all their strength just to live another day But hope will be the only thing to break this ugly fall To lift our heads and wake the dead who fell asleep to numb it all And when we wake the weathered rug pulled out from underneath us Will uncover the severed trust still living in between us We'll have no choice but work as one to knit us back together And pride will not be welcomed here as grace will be the measure. We feel it Fabric wearing thin Almost at the point where no one cares if they win. Almost Hello friends :) Beaituful November to you! Each time i sit down to draft my monthly newsletter, I find myself asking, what do I have to say? What's worth saying? Is anyone listening?
I love reading your responses. It reminds me someone's out there, even if I don't see you as often! So...i thought Id start this month's update with a new poem. Thanks for reading.
Here's what's new!
My Interview w/ Matt Tommey
I have been a fan of Matt Tommey's work for some years, partly b/c he mentors a dear friend of mine. He is a professional basket weaver and brings things to life in the most unexpected ways. Quite literally...i have never seen dead wood come alive like it does in his work. I'm so very excited to share my interview with him on Art & Faith Conversations. We discuss his new book Prophetic Art: A Practical Guide to Creating with the Holy Spirit, and talk about the profoundly mysterious co-creative process of engaging with the Spirit.
Rarely do I have a conversation with artist friends (singer/songwriters/musicians/visual artists/poets) who don't acknowledge the mystery of what they do - the act of pulling something out of pure imagination into our actual reality. I so enjoyed talking with Matt about this and I hope you enjoy this conversation too. Listen here! I've been making things!
Speaking of art... I had no idea that last year's shutdown would lead to hours upon hours each week in my art room making stuff! Mostly for myself, sometimes for friends, and then ultimately as a way to tell stories. I guess I call it visual storytelling. It's been a fun new practice on my Instagram account, if you care to check it out.
Anyhow, this fall, by a rabbit trail course of events, i started making instruments. Yes, instruments! And I've decided to do something completely different on my merch store this Holiday season. Since i do not have a new album out, I will be sharing unique one-of-a-kind instruments made by yours truly!
I've been combining my infatuation with keys, doorknobs, globes, and repurposed materials with my love for percussive things and i'm surprised by what came out! It all kind of stumbled on me and I am having so much fun "shaking" things up!! I hope you like the colors and the sounds! Listen here and here!
I'll be launching my Christmas store a bit earlier this year in order to try and avoid all the shipping snafus from last year so stay tuned!
