Hello Firstname
Wednesday 28 November
This week we get the chance to see a selection of images from the BPS Archive, presented by Pete McCloskey FRPS APAGB. The archive is an important part of both BPS and local photographic history and has for the last few years been kept at the Bristol Record Office. What we will see on Wednesday is a representative selection from the archive with commentary by Pete who has been a member of BPS for over 40 years and is therefore probably best placed to talk about these images, many of which date back to the 1940s and earlier and also includes some much more up to date work (images are still being added to the collection).
What will be interesting to see is how photographic styles and techniques have changed over the years; this, along with Pete's knowledgeable commentary will make the evening one well worth turning up for.

Slow News Week!
Following last week's lengthy edition I find that this week there is precious little to report - it could be that there isn't much going on or that I've just got a dose of writer's block. Whichever it is, it would be great if members could let me have articles, or suggestions for articles, to include in future issues. If you do have something you think would be suitable please email it to me at the usual address newsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk
As you will have seen from previous issues, we can now reproduce pictures; so if you have a picture that has done well for you recently please send it to me and I will try to include it in a future issue.

Ron Lane
A few of the more senior members of the Society will remember Ron Lane who left Bristol a few years back to move to Fareham in Hampshire to be near his family. Ron was a stalwart of the Society and for many years was the Treasurer; he was made a Life Member of the Society and now lives in a Residential Home in Fareham.
In January this year he reached the age of 95 (sorry Bob, you are but a child) and this month he will have been a BPS member for 60 years, both of which are pretty impressive milestones. I thought neither of these should go unmarked so we are sending Ron a congratulatory card (we can't make up our minds whether to have the number 60 or 95 on the outside) which will be at the club meeting next Wednesday for any member who remembers Ron to sign.

Photography Course
The 2012 Photography Course has just finished and Millie Spaven has sent me this "end of term report"

Last Tuesday saw the final evening of the photographic course with Pete Howell judging the end of course competition with his usual mixture of helpful comments and sense of humour. The high standard of the entries for this final session reflected the quality of work that this year’s course participants have achieved.  The numbers attending each session have remained high, never less than thirty which is far better than in previous years.  The additions that we made to this year’s syllabus which included Barry doing a lecture on Creative Photography - bats and all, and an extra field trip have been well received. A preliminary look at the feedback forms confirms our impression that it has gone very well, how enthusiastic those attending were over their photography and how keen they were to improve. Neil and I would like to thank all those who have helped in some way to run the Course, we could not have done it without your commitment and expertise . All we have to do is repeat it next year!!!
Milllie

What Millie doesn't mention in her report is the massive amount of work that she and her trusty cohort, Neil McCoubrey, do in organising the course, so from the Society - a big thank you, and thank you to all the BPS members who helped throughout the course!.

You might not be aware, but the Course makes a substantial contribution to Society funds. This is one of the main ways we are able to keep your annual subscription down to less than £1 per week, a figure that is considerably less than many may other clubs charge. In addition to this, the course helps to meet the requirements of our charitable status by promoting photography and educating the public in the ways of photography.

WCPF 2013 DPIC Competition
I mentioned this competition in last week's Newsletter. Pete McCloskey is still looking for images for this competition. We will be selecting our entry on Monday, 17 December so If you would like to have work considered for selection, could you please e-mail your pictures to Pete, in the usual BPS competition format, at pmccloskey11@btinternet.com .If you have any queries regarding this, you can either catch Pete at a regular Wednesday meeting or ring him on 0117 9241424.

Photographic Society of America - Creative Interclub Competition
Once again BPS has entered the PSA Creative Interclub Competition. We entered for the first time last year and came a very creditable second in our group. This year the groups have been shuffled up and we find ourselves in with clubs such as West Cumbria Photo Group from the UK and ZZZ Camera Club (yes, that is their name) from Massachusetts.
We need six images, one from each of six different photographers, so its no good thinking we can rely on the usual suspects for all the images. We therefore need all members to look at their image collections and if you have any creative images that you think might be suitable (the wackier the better), please email them to Barry (barrymead@blueyonder.co.uk) in the usual format, jpeg, 1400 x 1050 pixels max. We need images as soon as possible because the closing date for the first round is 1 December so get your creative juices flowing and your email finger working! If you can't make it in time for this deadline, don't give up because there are 3 more rounds for which Barry will require images.
More details of the competition can be found on the PSA website

New Members
Welcome to David Alderson who joined the Society this week as a result of attending the Photography Course; we hope you enjoy your membership of BPS and look forward to seeing some of your images in the future.

If you want to blow your own trumpet or, dare I say such a thing, blow someone else's trumpet for them, then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include it in the next issue.
