Petfood in the news
"Novel" ingredients in pet food will soon become popular, it seems, or perhaps just more common, as stories appear in the news quite often, such as those at this site: petfoodindustry.com.
On the horizon are insects, uncommon meats, such as kangaroo, and possibly laboratory-made meats to side-step the animal agricultural industry, which is fraught with inhumane treatment of animals. It remains to be seen which ingredients will gain popularity in the pet food markets and how soon. But as I just learned, some pet food manufacturers already are utilizing some new ingredients. Kangaroo, for example, has been a part of pet food products for a while, along with others, such as duck and rabbit, but we may be seeing more of these meats soon. So far, it seems they are more available from online sources. Here is a letter from a subscriber friend about kangaroo meat:
Dear Kitty Times:
I was surprised to see kangaroo meat for sale on the shelves of my local Pet Supplies Plus store last week. It came in pate form in standard-size cans from Koha brands.
I didn't buy any, but I asked the manager about the meat. She said yes, kangaroo meat is being more widely offered in pet stores for cats and dogs. She said it was a fairly lean meat and came from kangaroo farms specifically run to provide meat for these pet brands. In other words, the meat is not culled from wild kangaroos.
The manager said she had fed the meat to her cats. It didn't turn out to be her cats' favorite flavor - but it proved to be satisfactory for them.
Sincerely, Rosalie Schultz
Thank you, Rosalie, for your letter!
Has anyone else here tried different meats or other ingredients? Let us know your thoughts and how your cat responded.
