Last week, MiMi and I saw many Africans in Marrakesh showing off their long chunky Berber necklaces, dangling from their necks. The colourful beads symbolise sexuality, fertility, spirituality, womanhood and wealth, among other things. The tradesman and hawkers there wore the largest beads.
It’s hard work haggling in the heat, but we managed to bring some Berber beads back for our customers. With their bright colours and bold designs, these make great summer jewellery here. We also carried a few big chunky necklaces we’ll put on offer at bead shows – not enough to list online.

The picture, in the online version of this newsletter, of the goats in the tree was on the way to Essaouira on the East Coast. Moroccan goats climb into trees to reach their favorite nuts. They help the local farmers by eating part of the nut, leaving the rest to local Berber women that collect them from the ground to make argan oil.
The hotel we booked near the show was cancelled last minute, so we stayed in a pod at Sandbach, by the Trent & Mersey Canal. This was much better than expected – comfortable, and a great walk to the pub along the canal. We love one-day shows, rather then multi-day! They’re a lot less work and expense for the same takings – so next year we’ll be doing a few more, especially our own fairs at new locations.
New Forest Bead Fair
Enjoy a day out on Sunday 26th June, visiting us at this charming old-world village in the heart of the New Forest. Brockenhurst is bustling with old pubs and restaurants, yet offers spectacular views with ponies and donkeys wondering free.
Close to Southampton and Bournemouth – or if you’re coming north or London, its just 20-minutes from M27 at exit 1, and follow the A337 through Lyndhurst.

Cornish Bead Fair
The Cornish Bead Fair is in the village of Probus, Sunday 3rd July. Probus is almost right in the centre of Cornwall. Close to Newquay to the west and Mevagissey to the east.
About 50-mins south is St Ives and Falmouth – and 50-mins north Loo and Padstow. And Probus is easy to reach right on the A390.
