The Omer and school year are ending. Graduations and Shavuot are approaching. And everyone’s favorite time of year, summer time, is right around the corner.
I’ve often found it interesting that the Jewish calendar and the secular calendar both take a break during the summer. None of the shalosh regalim are during the summer, and the High Holidays mark summer’s end in much the same way that Labor Day and the start of school do. There is simply something about summer that compels us to take a break, relax, and enjoy.
So we will start the party with our annual Shavuot potluck picnic in the park on the second day of chag, June 13, where we will be celebrating not only the giving of the Torah but also Stan and Val's anniversary with delicious deserts generously provided by the Goldsteins.
For those looking ahead, summer time provides us with an opportunity to start planning for the High Holidays. If you would like to offer your skills, ideas or services to the Library Minyan this coming High Holiday season, please reach out to our Ritual Committee Chair, Mayer Brenner, who is already planning meaningful yamim noraim for the minyan.

In response to a variety of comments (a.k.a. complaints) and discussion at a Communications Committee meeting, I recently updated the Minyan home page. It is now easier to find out how to receive the Minyan Monthly, to donate money to the Minyan, to find information about Shabbat and holiday services (via the Gabbai Schedule), and to find the most recent Minyan Monthly in case you read it too quickly when it came out.
I realize that if you are reading this, you probably already know some of the above, but I urge you to remind anyone who wants to know more about the Library Minyan to take a look at our website and to sign up for our email. Either enter libraryminyan.org in your browser's address line or search for “library minyan.” Our site should be in the top two or three results.
If you have questions, you can easily reach me at webmaster@libraryminyan.org. Also and importantly, please send suggestions for improving and expanding the website to me anytime — but especially in the next few days. The Communications Committee, of which I am a member, meets again on June 6, and the website is an important focus of our attention.

More on the Shavout Picnic

In keeping with the beloved annual tradition, the Library Minyan Diaspora Potluck team will once again be organizing a bring-your-own-picnic-lunch gathering at La Cienega Park following services on the second day of Shavuot — this year, Monday, June 13.
Bring a blanket and dairy lunch for your family, games to share and ideas to discuss. Dessert will generously be provided by Val and Stan Goldstein in honor of their 40th Wedding Anniversary. Thanks in advance and Mazal Tov to them!
Child-oriented, supervised activities will also be provided. If you have a teen who would like to get community service hours or a small honorarium for serving as picnic youth counselors, please be in touch with Rachel Sisk rachelesisk@gmail.com or (310) 358-5598.
Otherwise, there is no need to RSVP. Simply head over to the park after services come to an end, with something to sit on and something to eat. See you there!

Habitat Mitzvah Day on Sunday, June 5 |
Here's your chance to join friends from TBA as well as B'nai David-Judea as part of the new Habitat for Humanity Jewish Coalition. Come to TBA on Sunday morning, beginning at 10 am, to do the pleasant work of assembling planter boxes and filling them with soil and seeds for Habitat homes. We will also pack welcome kits for families served by Habitat, so please bring along any hygiene and toiletry items that you have or can buy.
There's a suggested donation of $10 for materials used to build Habitat homes, but no financial contribution is required — only your presence. This is an ideal activity for singles, couples and families, old and young alike.
