Elizabeth Blackburn and the Story of Telomeres: Deciphering the
Ends
of DNA
Tuesday, December 11th at 7:00 PM
Author Catherine Brady and molecular biologist Elizabeth Blackburn will be on hand to discuss Blackburn's groundbreaking work on telomeric DNA, which launched the field of telomere research. Brady's book gives readers an in-depth look at Blackburn's struggle to break down barriers in a male-dominated profession and her dismissal from the President's Council on Bioethics after she objected that council reports misrepresented scientific evidence on stem-cell research and biomedical technology.

Short-row Ruff Scarf from One-Skein Wonders - One
3-hour
sessions, $50 (Price Includes Book)
Warm scarves are a must for our foggy clime, but sometimes the long ones just get in the way. Consider this attractive ruff as an alternative, for you or a loved one. Knit in a worsted weight yarn, it works up quickly but looks rather fancy. Plus, you’ll learn an excellent technique, short rows, that can be used for hats, sweaters, and all manner of other projects, as well as a simple buttonhole technique. The pattern comes from One-Skein Wonders, a fun book that is included in the class fee and may turn out to be your primo source for gift ideas this year.
