WHAT'S HAPPENING:  Fish School is going to be an engaging and revealing seminar on the fishing industry from Greg Mayor, a professional fisherman, expert and founder of EcoPawz. This is an excellent presentation Greg has done many times in the past to professional chefs/restaurant professionals, so this is a very exciting opportunity for the curious layman to learn about the fishing idustry from an insider. Feel free to invite anyone who wants to know more about sustainable fishing practices, contaminants, and what to look for when buying seafood.

Sustainable seafood refreshments will be served.

Greg Mayor honed his warehouse and fishing skills on the docks of New England working for East Coast Seafood, a live lobster company, in various positions spanning 17 years, as well as the prestigious restaurant group Legal Sea Foods as their auction buyer. Upon moving to San Francisco, Greg opened EcoPawz, a raw food company with a strong commitment to sustainable seafood, and vendor to SFRAW.

Topics will include, but not be limited to:

• Historical significance of seafood
• Present day seafood industry: logistics and distribution
• Seafood and the media
• Contaminants and the current prevailing nutritional guidelines
• Fish categories and migratory ranges
• Local fish species and availability
• Aquaculture and it's growing impact on global health
• Fishing methods
• What to look for when buying seafood
• The real deal with fish oils
• Q&A

FEATURED PRODUCERS

Barbarosa produces truly pastured, heritage-breed, hand-processed (on-site) chicken in Red Bluff, CA.

"By raising our chicken out on pasture in the sun, we are giving our chickens the absolute best lifestyle and they take full advantage of that. They love to chase bugs, take dust baths and nibble at the most tender bits of the grass. We supplement their diet with organic feed. - Tyler Dawley, Barbarosa Ranchers"

EcoPawz Logo

EcoPawz is a San Francisco based company dedicated to producing a wide variety heart healthy Omega 3 rich foods for dogs and cats in an environmentally friendly manner.

"Our ingredients come from sustainable and responsibly harvested fisheries and are as local as we can find them – most coming from California waters.
We work closely with the finest local seafood companies to purchase only the best seafood. This means our companions are helping to reduce over fishing, habitat destruction and by catch in our ocean ecosystems. We tirelessly seek out new ingredients, packaging and distribution methods to help reduce our impact on the environment and offer the best nutrition for our animals. - Greg Mayor, EcoPawz"

Tawanda Farms Logo
Tawanda Farms produces grass-fed, antibiotic-free Romney lamb in Montague, CA.

"Our farm practices are very simple. We maintain a healthy sward of mixed grass and a rotational grazing program.  We have only those numbers that can be well maintained on farm produced grasses.  In December and January we supplement the ewes late pregnancy needs with apples from a nearby orchard.  Stress is reduced or nonexistent. We believe this produces a better meat product. These animals give us so much. It is not an imposition to treat them with respect and gentleness in return. – Carol of Tawanda Farms"
