Hello Firstname

Wednesday 23 January

Next week we welcome Alyn Wallace from near the Brecon Beacons in South Wales.
Alyn will be presenting his talk Night Sky Wonders - Landscape Astrophotography.
Alyn is a self-taught landscape astrophotographer whose work has been used by the likes of NASA, BBC Earth and a number of popular photography magazines. Growing up in South Wales he has had the fortune of dark skies on his doorstep and has even photographed the Northern Lights from the Brecon Beacons on multiple occasions.
Alyn's talk will inspire you to get out under the stars and introduce you to wonders you had no idea could be witnessed without leaving the country. As someone who keeps no secrets, he will also share his settings and technique so that you feel further inspired and ready to get out and give it a go yourself. Get ready for a talk that is literally out of this world.
Above is one of Alyn's images from the talk. To see more of Alyn's work and read a bit more about him, why not visit his website

This event is usually very poorly supported by BPS members, with the majority of those who go being from the Salon Committee. It would be really great if other members could support BPS and go to Exeter on the 10th.

Competition To Enter
Close-up Photographer of the Year competition opens for entries
Photographing a trooping funnel mushroom or grizzled skipper butterfly could win you £1,000 cash and more than £1,200 worth of SIGMA camera equipment in the first ever Close-up Photographer of the Year competition (CUPOTY), which is now open for entries.
There are five categories to enter: Animals, Plants & fungi, Intimate landscape, Manmade and Micro (for images captured with a microscope), as well as Young CUPOTY (for entrants aged 17 and under). The competition is open to all, and entrants have until 23.59 (GMT) on 10 February 2019 to submit their pictures via the competition website www.cupoty.com.
CUPOTY is a celebration of close-up, macro and micro photography, but its scope is far greater than that. The ultimate aim is to encourage photographers to slow down, enjoy their craft, and make connections with others who are passionate about the world up close.
As such, the competition will be supported by a blog and newsletter covering everything from where to find perfect flower specimens to how to light macro subjects, and what to add to your kit bag. There will also be regular meet-ups and workshops.
CUPOTY co-founder, and former editor of Outdoor Photographymagazine, Tracy Calder says, “close-up photography allows us to explore intimate details, encouraging us to see the world anew. When we stop to notice the curved bands of a snail shell or jagged thorns of a rose stem we create a lasting connection with your environment.”
This year’s judges include award-winning photographers Ross Hoddinott, Sue Bishop, David Maitland, Robert Thompson and Keith Wilson. Judging will take place in February 2019, with the results announced soon after.

Trumpet Blower's Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free.
