Art & Writing Classes
Beginning this Saturday, January 21
Check out the exciting new Art & Writing classes being offered for adults by award-winning local artist Cara Goldstein, who received the Yale University National Teacher Fellowship in 2010 and holds an MA in creative writing. Classes begin this Saturday at BookShop West Portal.
Note: Each class is limited to a maximum of 9 students; materials included.

Poetry & Comics ($145)
Saturday, January 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This class is inspired by Dave Morice, author of Poetry Comics. Students will create comics based on famous poems or write poetry about comics. We will talk about the relationship between word and image, looking at examples from Morice's book.

Poetry & Painting ($145)
Saturday, January 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Ekphrastic art is when one art form references another. This workshop will focus on famous poems and paintings that were created this way. Bring your own photographs or printouts of an
artwork or poem you enjoy, and we will create works based on them.

Poetry & Portraits ($125)
Saturday, February 4 from 11 a.m.
to 2 p.m.
Learn how to draw a portrait using classical measurements. We will also look at poetry written
about portraits and discuss how a poem can inform a portrait or vice versa. You will have the opportunity to write a poem based on your drawing.

Perspective Drawing ($125)
Saturday, February 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Would you like to give your artwork dimension? This workshop will teach you one and two point
perspective. We will draw a fantasy cityscape and a room interior.

Surrealist Drawing ($145)
Saturday, February 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Discover how surrealist poets and painters like Dorthea Tanning, Dali and Magritte used symbols, dreams and photographs to create their own works. Students keep a dream journal a week before class to use as inspiration.

Create a Comic Book ($75)
Saturday, February 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Do you love to draw cartoons? Learn how to create your own characters with expression, movement
and storyboards.

Cara is also offering Individual Tutoring Sessions for all ages, which allow students to create their own class. Sessions are available from 3-4 p.m. or 5-6 p.m. on Saturdays, January 21st through May 31st. The cost is $65 per session.
Cara Goldstein has taught at SOTA and in California public schools for over six years. Her mentor, Al Baruch, is the creator of Captain Hook in Peter Pan for Disney.
