Ithaca Community Choruses Newsletter, August 2014
Greetings from Your Board!
Chorus-year postcards are here! Designed again by Voices member Susan Crowell, they include basic info on all 3 choruses all year.  Where could you post one or leave a stack, to recruit new members or remind old ones?? Coffee shops, restaurants, bars, music establishments, libraries, campus locations, churches…..if you spend time there, so do newcomers! I have all the extras from the mailing, and will leave a set for you on my porch in Fall Creek. Just email me with an approximate number. We have lots, so 50 is entirely reasonable. Write me at morgan@ithaca.edu.

Join the fun!
Volunteers guide each of our choruses, as you know, and also our collaborative projects. We are governed by the Ithaca Community Choruses board, which includes delegates from each chorus and additional members.

Would you like to be one of us? The board meets only 5 times each year and we get to support each other, sharing news and strategies from each of the choruses. We have space for several additional members, who can be current singers…..or not.

The board coordinates the marketing and special projects that support all 3 choruses, like these newsletters, our web page and Facebook presence, the ad sales for our big program shell, and open singing opportunities like workshops and Summer Sing If you are interested, write me at morgan@ithaca.edu.

Whether or not you want to join the board, you can certainly help! Here are some projects looking for people:
  • Ad sales coordination team
  • Web master for our WordPress based page
  • Facebook monitor for our fan page
  • Workshop organizing team

Summer Sing Success!
Summer Sing began as a small project of the Ithaca Community Choruses and with the inspired musical direction of Katie Howell, lots of eager singers, and the dedicated leadership of volunteers who know who you are, it has grown to over 80 singers! Here is a photo from the first rehearsal.
ICC&CS News
The Ithaca Community Chorus and Chamber Singers, our founding chorus, continues to welcome singers new to town, new to the chorus, or just returning! Our first rehearsal is on Wednesday September 10, 7:00-9:00 pm with registration from 6:15 to 7:00. We rehearse in the downstairs Dining Room of St Paul’s Methodist Church at Aurora and Court St.

For our concert on January 17 our director Gerald Wolfe has selected Haydn's gorgeous setting of the Seven Last Words of Christ with orchestra, and Michael Tippett's a cappella setting of five spirituals from A Child of Our Time, an oratorio written in 1941 in response to the holocaust.  The spirituals are:  "Steal Away,” "Nobody Knows the Trouble I See," "Go Down, Moses," "By and By," and "Deep River."  The arrangements are exciting and beautiful, and in Tippett’s oratorio function like the chorales in Bach's Passions.

For our concert on April 25 we'll be doing Brahms' incomparable Requiem with orchestra.  More information is here

IGMC News

The Ithaca Gay Men’s Chorus is a vibrant presence in our community. Open to all men with no auditions, rehearsals are underway on Tuesdays from 7 to 9:30 at FirstBaptist Church in Dewitt Park, Ithaca.

Big changes are coming to IGMC, with director Thom Baker’s departure for doctoral study. We have posted our director job description and are looking forward to having candidates come to rehearsal during September and work with the chorus a bit.  We began rehearsal in late July and have a few new guys who are testing the waters.  Andrew Hudson-Sabens has stepped in as assistant director and has been doing a fine job getting us ready for our upcoming appearance at Porchfest, and for our October 18 concert.

On August 16 a quartet from IGMC will be singing at a wedding on Seneca Lake; the processional is a song by Led Zeppelin (called THANK YOU) arranged by our accompanist and resident arranger Tom Peters, who will also accompany us on guitar for THANK YOU and for I CARRY YOUR HEART, an e.e. cummings poem set to music.

We hope to have Thom Baker return to guest conduct part of our January 18 concert. Off to a daunting but exciting start to our 6th season! More information is here
