Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 16 September

Next Wednesday we will see something a little different, when we dive beneath the waves for an inspirational talk called Underwater Photography - From Swimming Pools to Sharks, which is being presented by David Keep. David says:
"This talk covers my underwater photography, from working with models in the swimming pool to photographing the magnificent creatures that swim in the oceans around our world.
Examples of his work can be found by clicking here

I’m passionate about all forms of photography & confess to spending far too much time doing it! However, I’d describe myself as an image maker not a photographer as I enjoy the post-processing as much as I do taking the photo."

If you need more encouragement to tune in on the evening, why not read some of the great reviews of this talk, you'll notice that one word keeps occurring - amazing!

Digital Imaging Group
Next Monday, 14 September, we have our own ‘creative’ master, Barry Mead showing the work he has been producing during lockdown. He has not wasted this opportunity to catch up with work he has been waiting to finish and created several new works. Not to be outdone Ann has also agreed to show some of her work as well. Both have been regular contributors to the DI presentations but we have not seen them on zoom until  very recently and I look forward seeing their work.As usual all members of BPS are welcome to join the zoom meeting, especially if you have some of your images to show as well. We have had some very exciting speakers recently and if you have been inspired by their work to produce your own images we would love to see them. Please send your images to me by Sunday 13th September, 6 pm. As usual the images should be in JPG format, sRGB colour space and keep the size to 1600 X 1200 pixels (same as competitions). The size limit is not strict but allows me to receive the attachments within the 20 Mb limit per email. You may prefix your images by 01, 02, 03 etc. if you wish to show them in that order.

Competitions
Bi-Monthly Print Competition Round 1 and PI Competition update

As you probably expected, this competition will run as projected images, not prints. The entry procedure and competition will, therefore, be run under PI competition rules. Please send your entries to competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk just as if they were for a PI competition.

For administrative purposes, the competition will be titled NotPrint Round 1. Points gained in this round will count towards the DPI cumulative total. The closing date remains as Wednesday, 23 September and the judge will be Angela Rendell AFIAP, from Stroud Camera Club.

Just a reminder that the prescribed category subject for Advanced entrants for this round of the competition is ‘Patterns’.

If you need a reminder of the rules and requirements, do consult the BPS website. The necessary information can be found in Competition Info in the About Us drop-down menu. This includes details of the culling procedure to be employed should the total entry be more than the judge can reasonably handle.

Please note that the present competition regulations contain the following sentence:-

Prints and digital images, once having been submitted in a specific competition, will not be accepted a second time in the same competition, either in following rounds or following years.

Members should note that, for the purposes of this regulation, entries culled from a competition because of high entry numbers are regarded as never having been submitted, and are therefore eligible for submission to subsequent rounds of the competition.

Round 1 of the PI competition was heavily over-subscribed and as a result the following entries were culled:-

Intermediate class – All number 3 entries, leaving all members with two entries.

Advanced class – If the member submitted an entry into the prescribed ‘Creative’ section of the competition then then their image number 2 was culled from the ‘Open’ section. So all advanced class members have a total of 2 images remaining in the competition.

Spot The Difference
A Pair of Pears and a Pair of Jays – spot the difference

This is what comes of going on photo trips with your beloved. One image was taken by Graham Pears and won first place in Scottish Nature Photography Awards, behaviour category and the other was taken by Mary Pears and won a GPU silver medal in Welsh Salon - it just shows there can be some consistency in nature judging.

Below are the two images:

Can you tell which spouse took which picture. I'll give you a clue, we chaps are always right!

Another Tip from the Screen of John Hudson
Sharpening images in Photoshop using High Pass.

This is well known to many but may be useful to some:
  • Open picture in Photoshop
  • Copy layer
  • Filter – other - high Pass
  • Adjust to around 2% - press ‘OK’
  • Change Blend mode to ‘overlay’
  • Go to Layer – flatten image
That’s it - I find it helpful, but make sure that you do any noise reduction before this process or it could emphasize the noise.

Spam Warning
There is an email doing the rounds which appears to come from Zoom and is headed Notice of personal information processing. (This is not an advertisement) with a sending address of noreply@m.zoominfo-privacy.com - this is a spam, do not respond to it or click on any of the links contained within the email.
