April 2006 Update
In This Issue:
As a very short introductory note
ISA Hamilton EXPO 2006 has
come-and-gone, and based on the visitor and exhibitor feedback we've
received to date.... It appears that our exhibition just keeps getting
better and better every year. We're very grateful for the excellent
exhibitors, visitors, participants, and the assistants, and last but
certainly not least... a special thanks to Alice Kelly for all her
hard work and effort in organizing the details that helped in making EXPO
2006 a success.

Speaker: Ron Rigby, Process Engineer for AOC RESINS AND COATING INC., has over 20 years experience working in the process control industry. Ron started out designing tar sands surface facilities in Alberta before moving into plant mechanical projects and maintenance work at an integrated pulp, vanillin, alcohol and salt cake facility in Ontario. He is now overseeing the replacement and expansion of the Distributed Control System (DCS) at AOC. Ron is responsible for capital projects, process control and process engineering, and holds a BASc degree from University of Windsor and CET from Niagara College.
Abstract: AOC RESINS AND COATING INC. (Guelph, Ontario) is the most diversified facility of the 6 sites within AOC. Originally built 30 years ago by Owens Corning the plant was purchased by TAC in 1994. The parent company of AOC is The Alpha Corporation (TAC) of Tennessee. Before the open markets of today, the Guelph site provided a small tonnage of the full range of unsaturated polyester resin products for the fiberglass industry in Canada. Today this chemical plant’s products are sold worldwide. The facility is undergoing three significant process control changes. The existing DCS is to be replaced/upgraded in mid 2006. The new system will be expanded into the manually operated blending areas of the plant using fieldbus technologies. As well a third polyester reactor is being added which will increase resin output capacity by 2/3 rds. The challenge is, how a small, thinly staffed factory makes the most use of today’s powerful computer technology.
