Salsa World Series Volume 2 (DJ El Chino presents) 2-CD Set
Walboomers /$16.98 (original import)
Originally released: 2010
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA INTERNATIONAL
EditorsPick: DJ El Chino's terrific Salsa World Series 2 features lots of hard to find gems by the likes of Cutufla Septeto, Palo Yuba Orquesta, and much more. While Volume 1 focused on Venezuelan bands, Volume 2 encompasses salsa worldwide. This is a 2 album set offered as one digital package.
"Salsa is already beyond borders and this album is an example of this cultural development. Yes, salsa has been around since the end of the 60's, born in New York, but only made in Latin America and USA. But now salsa is produced in the whole world...
Alfredo Cutufla, the master timbalero from Venezuela, living in Paris since a long time, opens this compilation with all the fire for the dancefloor or in your car; just turn the volume up and you will be shaking your body. The second song is a killer. Cali born saxophonist arranger Mr. Hebrio took the big risk to arrange Mais Que Nada, one of the classics of classics, and he had success. Just play this song and you will have a row of people asking you about it.

LA COMBINACION SALSA BAND: OCTAVIO FIGUEROA & WILLY CADENAS
La Luna Y El Toro
Clave Records /$14.98
Originally released: 2010
Category: LATIN SOUL/BOOGALOO; SALSA
EditorsPick: What a terrific roots-based salsa project, from a couple of veteran salseros originally from Peru. The team takes on compositions by Sarmiento y Castellanos - the cover track La Luna y El Toro, Gilbero Mendez - with a killer A La Memoria del Muerto, Pedro Brunet's Tratame Como Soy as well as Celina Gonzalez' classic Santa Barbara. Cadenas' seasoned voice is perfect for this material, adding a dimension both soulful and commanding. Check out Que Dichoso Es, the gem composed by José Slader Badan. Old school, trombone framed, gritty ...and very cool. Also with George Lopez, Jesse Ontiveros, Dave Holland, Adam Rundquist, Gary Eisenberg and others. Highly Recommended. - elW ... continues (BP)

EditorsPick: his New York based bassist is celebrating 30 years as the leader of his orchestra - which just might be a longevity record of some sort! With lead singer Felix Falcón, and some special guests like conguero Richie Flores and cuatrista Junior Lopez. This one's a fine acquisition. Just the right vintage. EditorsPick: Two Ways is the first album by Latinjazz group Latineo, led by drummer Mark de Jong. The group has come to be known for taking new directions within the latinjazz genre through an original and refreshing sound. Both distinct and contemporary, Latineo shows that the evolution of latinjazz is still going strong. Latineo consists of 4 musicians who are considered true specialists within the genre. Pianist Marc Bischoff, Venezuelan bassplayer Yerman Aponte and drummer Mark de Jong belong since years to the top of the Dutch Latin scene. Specially featured on the album is Cuban percussionist José Pepe Espinosa, worldwide recognized as one of the best players around. On 2 tracks the group is joined by Dutch top saxophone player Efraim Trujillo. EL GRAN COMBO & FRIENDS
Salsa: Un Homenaje A El Gran Combo
Banco Popular/Selecto-Hits /$13.98
Originally released: 2010
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; PUERTO RICO
EditorsPick: Ok, folks, get ready for some major salsa! This production, backed by Banco Popular, is, as the title indicates, a tribute to the iconic mega salsa band; Puerto Rico's own El Gran Combo. The band itself is present, performing shining interpretations of their signature tracks like Achilipú and A Mí Me Gusta Mi Pueblo, but the truly cool stuff here is the interpretations of their material by the likes of Domingo Quiñones, Ismael Miranda, José Alberto "El Canario," La India, Tito Rojas, Issac Delgado, Michael Stuart, Luisito Carrion, Willie Colón, NG2, Carolina La O and others. Wow. You heard right, folks, the royal carpet was rolled out for this project, and some of these tracks are slammin'. Now it's this stuff, directed by Isidro Infante, that offers unexpected moments of pure salsa greatness.

JOE QUIJANO Y SU CONJUNTO
Lo Inédito De Tite Curet Alonso: Joe Quinano Y Augusto Onna
Cesta /$14.98
Originally released: 2010
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA; PUERTO RICO
EditorsPick: Whoa! Here's previously unpublished material by the great Tite Curet Alonso, finally brought to the light of day by bandleader and producer Joe Quijano. Recorded in New York and in Puerto Rico with a slew of amazing talent, Quijano's treasure trove of Curet Alonso material that lay dormant since 1959, offers a new window into the genius of the late, revered Puerto Rican composer. Quijano also includes one of his own compositions, Tributo a Don Tite Curet Alonso, a swinging extended descarga jam arranged by none other than Luis "Perico" Ortiz (who, by the way, arranged most of the tracks on this album). Perico also plays on the album (trumpets, vibrafono, tuba). Have I mentioned some of the other participants? Van Lester, Pete Bonet, Willie Villegas, Paquito Guzman, Nacho Sanabria, Harry Fraticelli, Orlando Marin, Pete Nater, Luisito Ayala, Jaime Rivera, Manny Mieles, Ralphy Perez, Raffy Torres, Eliut Cintrón and a bunch more...
Also included is a bonus track, a 1982 salsa version of Quijano's Efectivamente sung by Pedro "Bolita" Gomez recorded in Don Raul Alarcón's Latin Sound studios.
This one folks, is not to be missed. A collector's MUST HAVE.

ADALBERTO ALVAREZ Y SU SON
El Son De Altura
BIS /$16.98 (original import)
Originally released: 2010
Category: SALSA/SON; SALSA CUBANA; CUBA
EditorsPick: Like a magician who keeps astounding his audience, each new Adalberto Alvarez project achieves a level of beauty and soul that would be rare for any artist to pull out of a hat just a single time. Here's a guy who, in his fourth decade of recording, has produced dozens of amazing albums at that level. His skillful mix of salsa-son-timba and rumba is well known, and even expected. But what what gets you each time is how pristine each new project is, his his vision disarmingly clear. El Son De Altura is nearly a Cuban music history lesson in disguise, but you would never really think of it that way when listening for listening's sake. The music Alvarez weaves is so intricately nuanced with the different threads of Cuban flavors that you stop thinking in terms of genres and generations... it just comes off as great music; lush, churning, and bubbling with life and spirits. Yeah, it's a great dance record, but listen to this record carefully. There are special moments you won't want to miss. With guests Julito Padrón, César López, Grupo Rumbatá De Camagüey, and legendary pianist Frank Fernandez who, accompanied by Maria Victoria Rodriguez and Dorgeris Alvarez, completes this project with a live interpretation of the beautiful bolero Canción para Mamá Rosa. ... continues (BP)

Part 3 was recorded live in Mexico, and features the singers Juan Carlos Coronel, Charlie Zaa, Daniel Silva, Cali Aliman, Carlos Guerrero, Alvaro Granobles, Saulo Sanchez, Carlos Brito, Danny Daniel, Carlos Rendon, Zayda, Cesar Salazar, and Arnald Moreno. Also with trumpeters Dante Vargas and Jose Sibaja, bassist Alex Duque, Douglas Guevarra on congas and a whole bunch more. Very Highly Recommended.

Review to follow shortly, but in case you haven't seen or heard either monsters of salsa, Parts 1 or 2, here's a snippet of past reviews : "If you had any doubts about Colombia being the new epicenter of salsa, the DVD-CD combo Tributo A La Salsa Colombiana will be sure to set you straight. The power and intensity of a grand-scale production has been concentrated to accommodate a smaller venue, and the resulting effect is that you feel like you are part of the dynamics of this show. And, man, what a show... In short, this one will sure to bring on a fit of salsa euphoria. A big DJ Alert and Very Highly Recommended." (Stay tuned for our review of Part 3!) ...

ENYENISON ENKAMA PROJECT
Ecobio Enyenison
Enyenison Enkama /$16.98
Originally released: 2009
Category: FOLKLORIC; RUMBA and/or SANTERIA/LUCUMI
EditorsPick: Very Highly Recommended folkloric Abakuá release featuring Ramon Diaz, Pedro Martinez, Angel Guerrero and guests. A rare album of its type, and continues where Cuba's Grupo Andabo's 1997 Enyenison Enkama 2 left off. Recorded in very high quality at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, 2009. Those who are familiar with Ékpè and Abakuá hold this session in very high regard. The real deal. With Onel Mulet, Oriente Lopez, Ruben Rodriguez and many other noted musicians. Guests Steve Turre and Paquito D'Rivera. - BP

"...This recording by Proyecto Enyenisón Enkama is a brilliant effort to continue that conversation, using the same form in which both Ékpè and Abakuá have recorded their own histories: ritual phrases with symbolic rhythms. Members of Proyecto Enyenison Enkama have been leaders in the conversation with their African counterparts at each stage in the process, which certainly began before the first encounter in 2001. In 1997, the Havana rumba group Yoruba Andabo’s recording of ‘Enyenison Enkama 2’ (arranged and chanted by ‘Roman’ Díaz’) became the basis for the Brooklyn encounter; it included an historic chant evoking Efí Ebutón, the first Cuban lodge, that Nigerians interpreted as identifying ‘Obutong’, an important Calabar community. In 2000, Angel Guerrero led the creation of ‘Ibiono’ in Havana, the first full length CD devoted entirely to Abakuá ritual chanting that evoked historic lineages in Cuba and the foundation of Ékpè in Africa. Following this trajectory, in ‘Ecobio Enyenison’, Cuban Abakuá chant their history and proclaim their faith in their inherited traditions...

Originally released: 2010

The Africans didn't show up for the session in Havana, but the Cubans recorded anyway and the result was the Buena Vista Social Club! Revé, who continues to push the envelope he inherited from his father, never fails to deliver the goods. And he certainly knows how to pick his singers: Susel Orieta Gomez Perez (watch out for her, she's amazing), Dagoberto Vazquez Valdez, Pascual Matos Aguirre, and Emilio Frias Peña "El Niño." This beautifully produced album features special guests Chucho Valdés, Pancho Amat, Guajiro Mirabal, Grupo Kola Loka, Grupo de Changüí and more.
