PRESS RELEASE, Wednesday 17 September 2014

New Material Award Nominations

From 3D-printed canal house to ivory milk tooth jewellery

 Dutch version here
The New Material Award challenges artists, designers, and architects to present designs that answer today's questions and tomorrow's challenges. New sustainable materials or innovative use of materials serve as the guideline. The prize has two distinctions: the New Material Award with a cash prize of €15,000 for a finished product, and the New Material Fellow, for a detailed idea that requires further research. A committee of experts selected sixteen ideas and designs from the 82 entries. All nominated designs will be on display at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam from 20 November 2014 through 4 January 2015. On 20 November, a jury of professionals will announce the two winning designs during the festive presentation.

The New Material Award is a collaboration between the DOEN Foundation, the Materiaalfonds, and Het Nieuwe Instituut. These three organisations feel that artists, designers, and architects have an important role to play in initiating new developments in society and responding to current and urgent issues. The award focuses on the interface between science, design, art, and technology. It aims to challenge participants to search for solutions for the future beyond the boundaries of their own field. This commitment is reflected in the entries that show a wide variety of innovative solutions, in which functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability go hand in hand, as demonstrated by the following examples:

The 3D Print Canal House is a research project in which DUS architects, in collaboration with a number of national and international partners, work on the 3D printing of a canal house.

The Zandbank by Atelier NL shows that glass can also be made from non-pure types of sand. For this project, types of sand from different locations provide different colours, patterns, and textures.

Ivorisch by Nina van den Broek is an artistic project dedicated to the ambiguous beauty of ivory, resulting in the exploration of a jewellery line made of milk teeth. By pulverizing the material into powder and then manually shaping it into an object, it becomes possible to create a versatile new kind of ivory without any restrictions in shape.

Protective Underwear by Julia Veldhuijzen van Zanten wants to provide an alternative to highly polluting diapers by further research into absorbent materials.

CaCO3 Stoneware by Laura Lynn Jansen and Tomas Vailly uses the stalactite cave as a natural 3D printer. Products are subjected to a petrification process that lasts many weeks in specially chosen thermo-mineral springs with a high calcium carbonate content, also known as CaCO3.

There is a wide variety of new materials and applications, as demonstrated by these five nominated entries. The other nominees are: Borre Akkersdijk for B.B. Platform, Niels Datema for Graphlight, Milo Dool for Pendant Lights, Aagje Hoekstra for Coleoptera, Elisa Joolen for Invert Footwear, Chris Kabel for Blue Sky Project, Studio Eric Klarenbeek for Mycelium Project, Quintus Kropholler for Black Gold, Roos Meerman for Aera Fabrica, Ingrid Nijhoff for Inktkwekerij, and Tjeerd Veenhoven for No-ink.

Nomination Committee
This year the nomination committee included Marjan van Aubel (designer, winner of DOEN | Materiaalprijs 2012), Ger Brinks (lector Saxion, Knowledge Centre Design and Technology), Duzan Doepel (architect, partner at Doepel Strijkers), and Simone de Waart (designer, director of Material Sense), and was chaired by Edo Dijksterhuis (art critic and publicist).

Exhibition
All nominated designs will be on display at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam from 20 November 2014 through 4 January 2015. Prior to the exhibition, a jury of professionals will choose the two winning entries. The winners will be announced at a festive presentation during the opening of the exhibition on Thursday, 20 November 2014, at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam.

The New Material Award has two prize distinctions. A cash prize of € 15,000 for the best final product. The winner of the New Material Fellow is supported by Het Nieuwe Instituut for a period of up to six months to further develop his or her idea and research a new material or innovative application of a new material.

The work of all nominees can previewed on the new website: www.newmaterialaward.nl. There, an archive of all previous editions of the DOEN | Materiaalprijs, the precursor of the New Material Award, will soon be presented. The website generates a specific logo for each nomination based on six material and product characteristics. This creates a kaleidoscope of unique encodings. The logo on the home page is an average of the whole.
