 PET FOOD NEWS & INFO

Diseased petfood = diseased pets
"Food" for thought:
Did you know the FDA and other agencies do not care about the quality of petfood?

In 2019 the FDA said, “We do not believe that the use of diseased animals or animals that died otherwise than by slaughter to make animal food poses a safety concern…”
The following "ingredients" are found in many of today's commercial pet foods:

Diseased meat
Euthanized animals
Cancerous and tumor-ridden meat
Out-of-date human-grade meat still wrapped in its store packaging

In addition, even some of the largest and best-known manufacturing facilities have been documented to be infested with cockroaches and vermin.

It's no surprise that pets now suffer more diseases and die sooner than a natural lifespan.

What can one do? Basically, do your homework. Do as much research as possible, but be aware that petfood companies will not admit to such shortcomings.

1. Florida man saves cat from floodwaters

"As Floridians braced for Hurricane Ian, which made landfall late Wednesday afternoon [Sept. 29], one resident put his life at risk to rescue a feline who was left vulnerable to the raging storm. A video posted to Twitter by Megan Cruz Scavo has gained massive attention for a display of good humanity in action. The video, taken in Bonita, on the state's southwest coast, shows Cruz Scavo's boyfriend, Michael, wading through the knee-high water, trudging towards an air conditioner unit where a cat was perched on top."

2. Black Cats and Halloween

"At some point in time, the image of a black cat, hackles raised and eyes glowing, has become intimately associated with the Halloween holiday. They certainly add an aura of mystique to the season, but why black cats? Read on to learn more about how black cats and Halloween have come to be associated and separate the facts from the spooky speculation."

Bathing Your Cat

Cats normally don't require bathing, but if you think your cat needs a bath, it will be easier if you have someone to help.

Before you handle the cat, place a small towel over the side of the sink or tub for him to cling to. That will keep him or her from getting panicky on the slippery surface where he can't get a foothold.

Next, fill the sink with warm water--roughly 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Warmer or cooler water will cause your cat distress and may make it difficult to handle him.
Then put a drop of mineral oil in each eye to prevent irritation from soap.

When ready, place the cat in the water, holding her with one hand and lather quickly with the other. Or have your helper hold the cat while you wash the head, ears, and neck first so that any fleas on her body will not take refuge there while you clean the rest of her body. Be careful not to get shampoo in the eyes.

To make sure your cat doesn’t catch a cold after her bath, keep her indoors for several hours, on her cat bed, on a dry, folded towel, or in a carrier for safety.

Ready to Adopt?

Looking for another cat? Or have a friend who wants a cat?
Instead of buying a cat or kitten from a pet store or a questionable breeder, follow these suggestions:

Check with your local shelter or rescue organization. Often, during the spring and warmer months, cats reproduce almost exponentially in some cases, resulting in what's called "kitten season" around the world. Of course, it's extremely important to reduce this problem, sometimes also called "excess kittens," by having the adults spayed and neutered. Find out from your local agencies, if possible, if anyone is doing "TNR," or, Trap Neuter Release. You might even wish to volunteer to help, which would give you experience with many cats and kittens and you might find "the one" for you.

Other population control solutions can include donating to shelters to have one spay or neuter done. If everyone could do even just one, it would make a huge difference!

Inquire at your vet's office. Often, when there are no shelters in an area, or existing facilities are full, people may surrender cats to their vet. Since veterinary offices are not set up to be shelters, these "donated" animals will usually be euthanized in a relatively short time. Don't wait too long! Save a life!

Watch bulletin boards in your area. These may be seen at stores, laundromats, convenience stores, local newspaper ads, and online websites - especially social media sites. Also, ask your friends.

4. Barney, the Cemetery Cat

This one isn't about Halloween, but sometimes cemetery stories come up during the event. Unlike those scary stories, this one will warm your heart:

6. Do Cats Feel Love?

It's a question that many cat owners have wondered. And the answer is a resounding yes! Cats often feel love quite strongly for their owners and other companions. They're just sometimes a little more subtle about it than dogs. Have you ever asked yourself, "What do cats think about their owners?" The answer is that they think pretty highly of us. From slow blinks to purrs, kneading, and following you from room to room, cats show love in many unique and wonderful ways.
