There have been two calls from parents today concerning the Nationwide Test of Emergency Alert System. FHS is going to use the event as a learning experience. Telling students to silence their phones to eliminate a distraction is probably the sound educational practice based strictly on state standards. While the state standards do matter to me, we do more than just teach to those state standards. I have instructed the staff to allow the phones to ring, let the kids look at their phones for a minute and then go on teaching. A national alert is something I want all students to recognize. I don't think we have to spend a lot of time on it, but we do need to recognize the importance of it. I realize that many schools are doing the opposite and I am sure they have very good reasons.

Volley Against Violence is tonight. This is the annual event the Volleyball team puts on to raise money for domestic abuse. All proceeds go to local organizations. The team will battle the football team first and then battle the staff. A donation will be accepted at the door. It's always a lot of fun and it's for a good cause.

Screenagers is coming to FHS! Below is the promotional information. Please register at the web address included at the bottom.

Parents, educators, health care professionals, and employers are concerned about the negative affects mobile technology and too much screen time are having on children and teens. SCREENAGERS: Growing Up In the Digital Age is a film created by a physician and mother, Delaney Ruston, who uses a personal approach probing into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics, and internet addictions. Through poignant and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and offers solutions on how adults can empower kids to best navigate the digital world and find balance. The film is 68 minutes in length.
