TIPS BOX

If you have a new cat or kitten, you may have some questions about how to care for them. Feel free to send in your questions through the email address below and I'll be sure to include an answer here (if I can). If you're having an emergency, of course, please contact someone near you, such as your vet, in case you need to take the animal in to the office. I am not a vet.

This month's tip:

If you have just found or adopted any kittens, you may need to figure out how old they are if that isn't known. Here are some facts about kittens that will guide you.

HOW TO HELP ANIMALS

Always remember to check with your local shelter to see what they need. Your donation will go directly to the animals, as a rule, in sharp contrast to some of the large national groups, whose donation income goes toward large administrative salaries and other expenses, not always for animals. But to be sure, be prepared to check out the shelter. Not all of them are as honorable as they proclaim, either.

Post Office - new stamps for 2016 - now coming to a post office near you!

This has been bouncing between true, false, and maybe, and my latest inquiries have uncovered the latest:
The postal service has indeed decided to re-issue this set of stamps! The postmaster I checked with 3 days ago showed me the catalog for 2016 but no release date has been set. So keep your eyes out in your location.

Every month, I get a number of emails from people requesting information and help regarding their cats. I'm happy to help as I can, but please understand that I am not equipped to run a "hotline" where you can get your questions answered instantly. I work alone, caring for many cats, and some days I am not able to get online at all. If you have an emergency, obviously you will have to rely on a professional, such as your veterinarian or a behaviorist. There are websites that offer these services, too, and they may charge a fee to do so. I don't mind answering some questions for free, but there is no guarantee that I will always be available at the moment you need something.

What is Whisker Stress?

Whiskers are more important to a cat than most people realize. If anything happens to them, such as when some misguided person thinks it's fun to cut them off, it can cause a great deal of stress to the cat. For more information, check out my latest article on my blog: ouramazingcats.com.

How to De-stress a cat

Speaking of stress, here is one of the easiest and most effective ways to reduce that stress:

This explains why cats love paper bags, boxes, and even the bathroom sink!

Canine Influenza Has Infected Cats

It may be called canine influenza, but an expert has confirmed that the virus that sickened a large number of dogs in the
Midwest last year has now infected a group of cats in a Midwestern shelter.

Cats Forced to Become Vegetarian or Vegan Will Die

Cats are carnivores. How many times do people have to be reminded? Worse, how many cats must die until this fact is accepted?

Cat sent by mail survives 8 days in a box! This was an accident, not an attempt to ship a cat. Poor thing really was lucky to survive, but required veterinary care.

Pet Coloring Book:

April Fools' Day is over, but our friends at Entirelypets.com want to share an April fun file with everyone. If your cat likes to color, here is a coloring book just for pets (or their owners). It's only 4 pages, but hey, it's free!
