Our speaker next week is Martin Cooper LRPS, who will be presenting his talk called Mono Memories. Martin has this to say about his talk:
Over the years I have indulged in mono photography more and more although recently, what with Covid, moving house and everything that entails, my photography, in any form, has suffered somewhat. That said, I get out when I can so this talk encompasses images spanning several years of image-making.
|
|
So, why mono? Well, sometimes, colour can be distracting. Removing it
can reveal an image where you can see shape, form, depth, perspective
and texture more clearly than in any colour image. So the removal of
colour should be seen as an opportunity rather than as a restriction.
Conversion of a colour image to mono is a fairly straightforward process
these days, with a wide variety of tools at our disposal, but the
interesting thing with monochrome is that it probably lends itself to
personal style more than colour: discuss!! As a result, mono is becoming
more and more prevalent in my work to the point where I now look to
interpret certain things I see in mono rather than colour. |

Our speaker on the 20th is Jeanette (Jet) Lendon who is going to be talking about Smartphone Photography.
Jet is the founder and Creative Director of Jet Black Squares. Combining her former teaching career in the East End of London with a more recent corporate photography business of 13 years, she has created a hub for everything creative surrounding the smartphone. Her passion is showing people of all ages how to get the best photos from their phone - she believes that photography should be available to everyone and not just those who have a ‘big camera’.
|
|
Jet’s Smartphone Photography talk is very interactive, and is a mix of a
presentation and also a screen-share of her phone so you can see
exactly how to set up and control your smartphone camera. Suitable for
all makes and models of phones.
Jet Black Squares has grown to
having over 15 associates all over the UK and Ireland, all delivering
fun Smartphone Safaris for people of all ages, igniting the passion for
photography - whatever camera they use.
Here are a few images from the talk:

Please Note: This meeting will now be a Zoom only meeting, with the talk being Zoomed into both the clubrooms and members' homes.

DI Group Meeting – Clubroom/Zoom - 11 March, 7.30 pm
Seven presentations in the February meeting kept us all absorbed with what is possible with creating exciting images in various genres of photography.
John Chamberlin surprised me with his experiments with intentional camera movement (ICM) as he is well known for his wild life and landscape images where camera movement is strictly avoided. He was inspired by a recent speaker, Rose Atkinson, who specialises in ICM and it was good to see him try a new style and create a few good images. We have quite a few inspirational speakers in the club meetings and I hope other members would try something new and, like John, share the results with fellow members.
Colin Dixon is another adventurous photographer trying out new techniques with some striking results. He creates wonderful images of models both in a studio and outdoor environment and he showed pleasing images of a model created by light painting technique. This is quite unusual for model photography where daylight or flash is normal source of light.
Rachel Domleo shared the secrets of how she created her winning image ‘Deep Autumn’ recently for the PDI competition. She showed how combining several images in a sympathetic way can create a very pleasing impressionist style image. Bristol’s annual Light Festival was on in the previous week and she braved the wet and cold weather to grab a few colourful images, examples below:
Derwood had focused on dance images taken mostly in a studio as well as in theatres. The dynamic poses, simplicity of the clean white background and appropriate lighting blended with a touch of texture take his images a long way in international salons and competitions.
John Hudson has been consolidating his experience in flying a drone to capture images of cathedrals including Canterbury cathedral which he recently visited. With all the restrictions on places where you can fly a drone from he managed to photograph it from the air, a completely different viewpoint from the usual stock of images. He has kept up with his dance photography in theatres in London and it was a joy to see a handful of his stunning images.
Sue Swift also took the opportunity to visit the Bristol Light Festival and showed some beautiful and colourful images to complement Rachel’s images very well.
Anita Fullerton has been experimenting with dried tulips which she had pressed and photographed backlit on a light table revealing the subtle colours and the delicate vein structure of the flower. Furthermore using some other smaller flowers she composed minimalistic images in an artistic style with pastel shades of colours.
Ibrahim Gitteh Massiah presented one monochrome image for a critique on improving it.
The next meeting of the DI group is on Monday 11 March in about four days’ time. It is in the usual format of presentations submitted by members. All BPS members are invited to share their images in an informal atmosphere. It is a good opportunity to show your work or to invite comments on your images from your fellow members, especially if you are planning to submit them for competitions or exhibitions. You are also welcome to ask questions on digital imaging or just sit and watch the proceedings if you wish.
For the submission of images I would still like to maintain the current system of sending them to me before the meeting. It allows me to prepare the presentation folder in advance for a smooth presentation. When you are ready, please email your images for presentation (about 2 to 20 minutes) to reach me by 6pm-ish Sunday 10 March. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict). To show them in a specific order, please prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email, as many as necessary. You may also use WeTransfer or Dropbox link if convenient.

Zoom Meetings - The Home Experience
|
Whilst every effort is made to
transmit what goes on at meetings to the members at home, there are some
limitations in what we can do, and this week's meeting was an example of the
problems we can face. Unfortunately this latest meeting was somewhat of a
rarity for BPS, i.e. it relied on audience participation and sadly it was not
possible to share this fully with those at home - it was not feasible to pass the
microphone around to catch all that was being said, as audience responses were
happening so quickly and in different parts of the room.
So (sorry to say) the Zoomers will
have to accept that not every meeting will be perfect for those not actually
in the clubrooms.

Last weekend saw the annual running of the WCPF Knightshayes Trophy, held this year at West Monkton Village Hall near Taunton. Two members of BPS acquitted themselves particularly well by gaining Highly Commended awards for their efforts: |
|
|
Ralph being presented with his Highly Commended certificate for his print Ice, Sea & Fog (see above) |
|
Also gaining a Highly Commended was Rachel Domleo with her print Driving Rain
