1 Thessalonians 5:4-5 But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness.
THAT DAY IS GOING TO BE AWESOME: BE GLAD YOU SEE IT COMING
In the Bible, night and darkness are often held up as illustrations of sin and unbelief, and here too that illustration is intended. Those who are "in darkness" and "belong to the night" are those who are unconcerned about their sin and guilt. They live in their evil without even wanting to turn away from it. They are not looking for forgiveness and do not trust in a Savior to rescue them from what they deserve for their wicked deeds.
For those people, their sin is all around them like a thick, dark cloud, and it keeps them in the dark. It keeps them from seeing what they need to see. They do not see that the Last Day is coming.
But it is not so with you, is it? No, you are not in darkness so that Day should surprise you like a thief. You are all sons of the light and sons of the day, for that is what God has made you. For you, the Day of the Lord's coming will not be a surprise because you have been brought into the light so you can see it approaching and be ready for it.
God has brought you from the darkness into the light. He has brought you to see and know your sinful condition. He has shown you that His own Son, the Lord Jesus, has died and risen from death to free you from your guilt, suffering its pain in your place -- and He has persuaded you to believe this. You do not live in the darkness, so you see that the Lord will come again. You see that your redemption is drawing near.
So be ready for that Day by being thankful that that you have been given eyes to see it coming and faith to be glad in your Savior's return.
