Info from the LVHMC Farms!
Each week we give you a look at what is happening at the LVHMC member's farms and businesses.
Marc & Angie Jimenez of Cocina Rivas (Leesburg Saturday Market) attended the Third Annual Peppers Tailgate Party at Rehobeth Beach, DE over the May 18 weekend. Chileheads from all over came out in crowds to sample sauces and other products from vendors across the country. Also attending were famous chefs and authors, and a Guinness World Record for eating hot chiles was broken. Steve "The Machine" Smallwood demolished the previous Guinness world record of 3 ghost peppers by eating 8 ghost peppers in 1 minute--then a short while later, he proceeded to set a new record by eating 8 Trinidad Scorpion peppers in 1 minute.
There were all kinds of pepper products available, from Cocina Rivas' salsas to Jalepeno Chips--even hot pepper infused chocolates. Marc says the focus was on Wing Sauces, with contests and free samples all weekend.
Marc was interested to find that his style of home-processed salsas and sauces were in the minority. Most of the products available there were made by processors in Florida and bottled for the vendors. His family enjoyed the weekend at the beach (who wouldn't?), but he knows his customers at the Leesburg Market appreciate the work that goes into his products!
Check back next week for more "Info from the LVHMC Farms"!
Farm Market Foodie
Go for the Heat to Fight Fat!
Researchers have revealed that eating foods with capsaicin once a day can lead to a reduction in abdominal fat. Capsaicin is the ingredient in chili peppers and other spicy food that causes the familiar "burning spice" sensation.
Scientists from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) examined capsaicin found that the ingredient can naturally lead to fat loss and fight obesity. Published in the journal Digestive Diseases and Sciences, the authors revealed that caspaicin could be a natural method of combating obesity that is nearly as effective as intensive surgeries--and with far less complications and risks.
So pick up some spicy foods at the Farmers Markets this weekend! Have some salsa on your fresh salad or on top of your chicken or steak. Try this week's recipe for Spicy Albondigas--you can find most of the ingredients here at the Farmers Market.

Earth Day Every Day!
Breathe Easy Indoors
Properly ventilating your home is one of the best ways to protect and improve air quality for your family.
High levels of moisture in your home increase dampness and the growth of mold, which not only damage your home but threaten health. Dampness and mold are linked to increased wheezing, coughing and asthma attacks in people with allergies. Normal daily household activities--including cooking, washing and even breathing--produce water vapor, so having adequate ventilation is essential to remove moisture from the air.
Try these dehumidifying tricks to keep the humidity in your home below 50%:
Install and run exhaust fans in bathrooms to remove unhealthy moisture and odors from your home.
Make sure that vents exhaust air outdoors and not into other parts of your home.
Remove any mold damage or growth and fix all leaks.
