Matthew 14:27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid."

FAITH'S FOCUS

These verses are found in middle of the account of Jesus' walking on the water (read Matthew 14:22-33 for the whole account). They may be familiar to many people, but should be especially comforting for the child of God. Jesus had sent His disciples out on the sea knowing that they would run into trouble. Jesus used this event in the lives of His disciples to demonstrate His power and to strengthen their faith.

The disciples were afraid. They didn't know what was going to happen to them. But Jesus did. He was with them every step of the way. He was in control, and was there to deliver them.

God also uses trials in our lives in order to test and strengthen our faith. Though it may seem like we are all alone, He is with us through it all. As we face the storms of life, Jesus tells us: "Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid." Our Savior tells us not to focus on the wind and the waves that surround us and threaten us -- but to look to Him, and trust Him for our deliverance.

Matthew tells us "When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, 'Truly You are the Son of God'" (Matthew 14:32-33). Jesus has power over all things, and He is able to deliver us at any time. Trials will come, and when they do, remember that your Savior is still there, telling you "It is I, do not be afraid!" Trust in His wisdom, His power, and His desire to do what is best for you!

Be still my soul; they God doth undertake
To guide the future as He hath the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence, let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.
(The Lutheran Hymnal, 651:2)
