Nice year, indeed. From salsa to timba to Latin jazz and more, 2011 proved to be one of the most interesting and memorable in recent years. Notice, however, the scarcity of major label projects on this list. The independents are the ones in the trenches and, apparently, are fully up to the task. Superlative projects like Mambo Legends Orchestra, Santiago All Stars, Bloque 53 and Carlos Cascante indicate that what we have here is not simply an abberation, but a real live movement. Great music will be made. And bands like Bio Ritmo and Williamsburg Salsa Orchestra prove that great salsa is being made outside the box, and can speak to a whole new audience. This is major.
