Hello Firstname

Wednesday 12 June

Next Wednesday we welcome Richard Baker with his talk The Red Arrows and Street Photography. Richard has been a freelance editorial and corporate photographer since studying Documentary Photography at Newport in the mid-80s. Since then he has historically worked at the Observer newspaper, colour supplement and worldwide reportage magazines alongside annual reports and company image collections. He has also collaborated on books about the world of Work, A  Heathrow Diary, Religion for Atheists, and Risk-Takers.
Following an essay celebrating the 100thanniversary of the Wright Brothers’ first flight, his series about the aesthetics of aviation led to a year photographing the Red Arrows that resulted in a uniquely alternative book of documentary and landscape about the RAF’s aerobatic team. He nowadays contributes reportage photography to Getty Images with reportage from the UK and other countries.
In the first half, he explains how the Red Arrows project was produced with technically challenging medium-format film cameras - and in the second half, that of more recent, self-initiated work that sells to the worldwide imaging market. Responding to seasonal or news themes, they are quirky colour observations.

DI Group
The monthly meeting of the Digital Group will take place on Monday 10 June, at the clubroom as usual. All members are invited to join in to show off whatever they have been doing - as prints or projected images. If you are bringing images for projection please put them on a flash drive in a folder of your name as JPG files, sRGB colour space and of any size.  If you want help with your images or have questions to ask there will be an opportunity to ask fellow members or just come and watch the proceedings.
In BPS we are lucky to have our own clubrooms with many facilities and members with considerable experience in various fields. I welcome suggestions on how we in the digital group can tap into those resources for the benefit of many members wishing to enrich their photography.

Air Conditioning
Now that the warm weather has arrived, we are having to use the air conditioning to cool the room rather than heat it, this has led to a flurry of complaints (mainly from the front few rows) that it is too cold. However, this puts us in a "no win" situation - the system is set at its lowest fan speed and at the recommended temperature for a room such as ours (22.5oC) and is directed as high and close to the ceiling as possible. If the system is turned on, those at the front complain that it’s too cold, whilst if the system is turned off, people in the rear half of the room complain that it is too stuffy & warm, Next week I will try a new setting whereby the fan will operate in what is called swing mode (that doesn't mean that everyone has to get up and boogie), so that the flow of air isn't directed permanently in any one direction, let’s see if that works. As we move more into summertime the need for the air-conditioning is going to increase, so if you can't take the cold, I suggest that you wear your thermals. The important thing to remember is that we are trying to make the place as comfortable for as many members as possible and that the system should be set for the majority (that'll get me into some trouble!).

New Creative Competition - Closing Date 12 June

I have previously mentioned the new Creative Image competition that is due to be held after the Society AGM on 3 July. On the left you can see a computer generated image of the Bob Faris Trophy that will be up for grabs on the night for the best creative image (print or PDI). The competition is to be judged by Colin Harrison FRPS FIPF FBPE MFIAP MPAGB EFIAP/d1 MPSA AWPF APAGB.

Below are the rules of the competition:
For this competition, a submitted image must have originated as a photographic image or images, produced either in camera or by post processing. All images must be original and may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else. Artwork or computer graphics generated by the entrant may be incorporated so long as the original photographic content predominates. Digital skills should be seen as the tools to compose photographic images into one new single image. The final composition will show the photographer’s artistic interpretation.
Rules
1.      This is an Open competition, with no levels of entry.
2.      Images may have been entered into any previous club competition and may be entered into any subsequent bi-monthly or annual competition, other than this one.
3.      The Trophy winner will not be eligible to enter the next two Creative Competitions.
4.      Each entrant may submit up to three images. These may be all DPI, all Print or any combination of the two.
5.      The judge will select a Best DPI, a Best Print and award the trophy to one of these two.

As many will know, BPS is one of the two clubs representing the WCPF at the PAGB Inter-Club PDI Competition at Warwick University on 13 July, below is a copy of the PAGB flyer advertising the event. It would be really great if members could go along to show support for BPS at what is always a great day out. Click on the flyer to find out more and to purchase tickets.

Trumpet Blower's Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
