ADVANCED PAPER AIRPLANE DESIGN with
John Collins

** A SPECIAL ONE-TIME CLASS **
The foremost designer of paper airplanes in California, John
Collins
- author of Fantastic Flight and Gliding Flight, will be offering a
special, one-time class THIS Saturday, August 25th, for anyone interested
in learning more about paper airplanes, their design, and what goes into
making them. Over the course of 2 hours (with a 10-minute break), John
will go over at least three designs and discuss basic design concepts and
much, much more. Some of the topics he will cover include:
Learning to fold one or two simple paper airplanes with...
* Hints on designing your own planes
* Basic diagram reading (international standard
Randlett-Yoshisawa
origami notation)
* Discovering the Waterbomb Base
Learning adjusting and throwing techniques with...
* Predicting with your plane will do before you throw it
* Basic turns and loops
Learning one advanced paper airplane which includes...
* Multiple layer techniques like the "squash fold", "sink fold",
and
"petal fold"
* Advanced diagram reading
* Basic aerodynamics
(All planes are folded from single sheets of 8.5" by 11" paper. No
cutting, taping, gluing, or weighting is required.)
The class cost is $30 for the entire 2-hour session. Attendees must
be at

KNITTING AND FIBER ARTS CLASSES with
Thea Gray
Classes beginning Monday, September 10
LEARN TO KNIT
Four 2-hour sessions, $90
Mondays, September 10, 17, 24, and October 1; 7:00 - 9:00 pm
also offered Sundays, October 14, 21, 28, and November 4; 10:30 am
- 12:30 pm
This class will equip you with all the basic skills you need to make
your own scarf, hat, shawl, poncho, or blanket. You'll start your own
project in the third class. A set of needles and a skein of yarn are
provided for learning techniques; students will be given guidance as to
what to purchase for their first project.
Prerequisites: None!
Materials: Initial materials provided; additional materials to be
purchased by student following the 2nd class.
FIX IT!
One 2-hour session, $25
Sunday, September 16; 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
This class will teach you how to fix your mistakes, focusing on
repairing mistakes in the current and previous rows, and three ways to
unpick stitches
Prerequisites: Beginning knitting class or equivalent
experience
with knitting and purling
Materials: Bring a skein of smooth worsted weight yarn (any
fiber);
a pair of size 8 (5 mm) needles, striaght or circular; a crochet hook
size
G, H, or I; and a swatch in stockinette approximately 4" square
KNITTING SOCKS
One 3-hour session, $35
Sunday, September 23; 10 am - 1 pm
This class will walk you through all the steps on your first
mini
sock, from casting on and working in the round on double-point needles to
turning the heel and sewing up the toe with kitchener stitch. You can
complete the second sock at home.
Prerequisites: Cast-on, bind-off, and mastery of knit stitch
Materials: Bring a skein of worsted weight yarn (preferably wool
or
wool blend), set of 4 or 5 size 8 (5 mm) double-point needles (preferably
5" long, wood or bamboo), and a tapestry needle
SHAPING WORKSHOP
One 2-hour session, $25
Sunday, September 30; 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
Learn a variety of increases and decreases that will help you
understand, execute, and even improve upon patterns for hats, sweaters,
and the like.
Prerequisites: Beginning knitting class or equivalent
experience:
cast-on, bind-off, and knit and purl stitches
Materials: Bring a skein of smooth worsted weight yarn (any fiber)
and a pair of size 8 (5 mm) needles, straight or circular
INTERMEDIATE KNITTING TECHNIQUES
Four 2-hour sessions, $85
Mondays, October 15, 22, 29, and November 5
This class will help you to perfect your techniques and learn
new
ones, enabling you to tackle more advanced projects and produce more
professional garments. You will learn how to repair mistakes such as
dropped stitches; execute different increase, decrease, and selvedge edge
stitches; pick up stitches for sleeves, neck edges, and the like; and
seam
garments like a pro. Students are welcome to air their knitting
quandaries
in class.
Prerequisites: Beginning knitting class or equivalent
experience:
cast-on, bind-off, and mastery of knit and purl stitches
Materials: Bring a skein of smooth worsted weight yarn (any
fiber);
a pair of size 8 (5 mm) needles, straight or circular; a tapestry needle;
and a crochet hook, preferably size G, H, or I
Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and space is
limited to a maximum of 8 people per class.
