Next Wednesday we welcome back to BPS, Matt Emmett who will be presenting his talk called Forgotten Heritage.
Matt, of Forgotten Heritage, is back for his third talk at BPS, with images of more incredible ruins and lesser known history from across Europe. Along with his heritage photography he has also been enjoying getting out with his camera at night and light painting towers, trees and more he will be giving a walkthrough of camera settings and how he lights his subjects for those that might like to give this fun genre of photography a go.

PAGB Interclub PDI Competition 2023 - Warwick |
Last Saturday seven intrepid club members travelled up the M5/M42 to Warwick University to the annual PAGB Interclub PDI Competition in support of BPS, who were one of the two clubs representing the WCPF, the other club was Dorchester. Mike Martin, our External Competitions Secretary, has sent me the following report on the day's events.
This national competition is a battle between the top two representatives from each Federation (we represented the WCPF) and those clubs that automatically qualified by finishing in the top eight last year. The competition comprises two rounds of eight images, before the top 8 clubs battle over a further 20 images. The remaining clubs, compete in the Plate competition, each with a further 8 images, a maximum of four of which can have been used previously, and no more than 2 nature images. Round 1 marking was hard, we finished in joint 9th on 94 points (equal with Smethwick), with the North Cheshire (1st) only 4 points ahead on 98! Catchlight & Beyond Group languished mid table on 90! Dorchester were 1 point below us. Round 2 marking relaxed. We improved to a creditable 97, but Catchlight proved masters of the game as did Rolls Royce, each scoring 104.
Insects did really well especially mating flies, nature did well as always, as did the Smethwick style of portraits (perhaps we should re name as Chorley style?).
Creative was middling as was sport. Fantasy figures were middling, but anything abstract / creative bombed. Looks like insects on leaves replaced birds squabbling!
Adding the two rounds scores together, the placings were:

So we failed the cut off by one point.....
In the Plate, we re-used our 4 highest scoring images (sadly two of these dropped a point when being re-judged!)..... if they hadn’t we’d have been 2nd by a point!
We finished with 99 in Joint 5th. Doncaster won with 102 only 2 points above us.

What next? We’ve got to do it all over again, winning at the WCPF competition to earn our place next year. But before then, there’s the small matter of the PAGB Inter-club Print Championship in Blackburn. Fingers crossed for that.
Below is a table showing which images were used and in which round, with the scores for the images that did particularly well being shown (scores out of 15):

AI - Latest from FIAP, PSA & RPS |
Wherever you look in the photographic press and media these days you are confronted with pages of discussion and comment about AI. I reproduce below, three such items: one from FIAP and one from PSA which relate to ALL FIAP & PSA approved salons and the other an extract from the RPS website quoting their latest interim policy.

Photographic Society of America (PSA) – End of Year print awards.
You may recollect our success in PSA competitions, both PDI and Prints Just received the results for the above. Like the PDI End of Year awards images that received awards earlier in the year in the 3 rounds that determine the club ranking, are re-judged to give individual awards....... and BPS members did rather well. Congratulations to Jay, Colin, Barry (thrice) and me... commiserations to Andrew, Ashwin, Derwood, Mary, Paul and Ralph.

The following appeared last week, but has been updated due to changed circumstances.
Mike (Martin) has been contacted by a couple of models offering the opportunity to work on location or in the studio – as below:
Photoshoot – Darcy Smith – SUNDAY 13 AUGUST
Rescheduled due to the rail strikes.
Some of you may have already worked with Darcy having attended a BPS session following a shoot with the Photographers with Disabilities in May.
Darcy comes from Devon but is planning to travel to Bristol on Sunday 13 August. (Balloon Fiesta weekend in case you have other plans)
Her modelling rate is £35 per hour either 1:2:1 or for a small group (sharing the cost). I’d suggest for practical reasons a minimum of a 2 hour slot to allow for a change of looks.
Contact Mike Martin if you’d like to photograph Darcy, giving your preference for:
- 1:2:1
or a group
- with
Mike assisting or on your own
- preference
for location in Bristol (and suggestions) or studio
Mike will try and co-ordinate the day to best match your needs. Priority will be given to those who have already expressed interest; still space for a few people.
Photoshoot – Azadeh Safei – between 26 – 30 August
Mike worked with Azadeh a few years ago. You may recognise her from one of Mike’s creative images. Azadeh is based in Southampton, but is travelling to Bristol over the bank holiday, so this is an opportunity to work with her and avoid her travelling costs. Her modelling rates are £150 for a half day or £250 for a full day. This includes choice of outfits from her extensive (and mildly bonkers!) wardrobe as well as make-up and hair so no MUA is needed.
Contact Mike Martin if you’d like to photograph Azadeh, giving your preference for:
- date
- 1:2:1 or a group
- half day / full day
- with Mike assisting or on your own
- preference for studio, or suggestions for a location
- any specific outfit(s) you’d like to photograph
Mike will try and co-ordinate to best match your needs.

Following on from the recent talk by Tracy Lund when she showed a few pictures of Arctic Foxes, our own Arctic Fox expert, Richard Kay, has had considerable success with fox pictures (and a bear) in the Midland Salon:
- Brown Bear at Sunset was accepted
- Blue Morph Arctic Fox Shaking was accepted and was awarded a FIAP Gold Medal
- Blue Morph Arctic Foxes Fighting was accepted and was awarded a PAGB Ribbon

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes |

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
